This module will equip students with the underlying knowledge and understanding of counselling values, theory and practice. The learning contextualises the variety of counselling models and approaches to supporting people within professional practice.

Ethics, Law and Policy in AMHP Decision-Making
This core module develops the ethical, legal and policy literacy required for statutory decision-making as an Approved Mental Health Professional (AMHP) in Wales. You will learn to apply values-based practice, human rights principles, and Welsh mental health legislation to reachbalanced, defensible decisions in complex mental health situations. Teaching explores the Mental Health Act 1983, the Mental Capacity Act 2005, the Mental Health (Wales) Measure 2010, the Social Services and Well-being (Wales) Act 2014, and the Welsh language duties under the Active Offer. Lived-experience contributions highlight how power, inequality, discrimination and cultural diversity shape mental health practice. Through workshops, case discussions, applied scenario analysis and simulation-based learning, you will develop structured ethical reasoning and the ability to justify AMHP decisions clearly in both written and oral formats. The module also promotes the ethical use of digital tools and generative AI in professional learning and decision-making. Learning is fully aligned with Social Care Wales requirements and contributes to the demonstration of the 34 AMHP competencies, preparing you for accountable, rights-focused and policy-informed AMHP practice.

Professional Practice, Accountability, and AMHP Decision-Making in Mental Health
This core module develops advanced skills in statutory decision-making, professional accountability, and competent AMHP practice within the Welsh legal and policy framework. You will apply the Mental Health Act 1983 (as amended), the Mental Capacity Act 2005, and the Mental Health Act 1983 Code of Practice for Wales (2016) to complex real-world practice situations. Learning also considers additional Welsh statutory duties, including the Social Services and Well-being (Wales) Act 2014, the Mental Health (Wales) Measure 2010, and the Welsh Language (Wales) Measure 2011 through the Active Offer. You will examine how AMHPs plan, coordinate, and justify compulsory interventions while balancing rights, risk, and least-restrictive practice. The module emphasises defensible decision-making, multi-agency working, record-keeping, communication under pressure, and safe, lawful practice in high-risk situations. Teaching is integrated with supervised placement learning and the completion of a structured Practice Portfolio, including direct observations of practice, supervision records, competency mapping, and professional commentary. You will evidence achievement of the 34 Social Care Wales AMHP competencies and demonstrate readiness for recommendation for AMHP approval in Wales. Students will also develop confidence in using digital tools and generative artificial intelligence ethically, responsibly, and in line with professional standards to support reflection, analysis, and continuing professional development.

Health Promotion and Protection
This module lays the groundwork for understanding how public health promotion works in practice and policy. You¿ll explore the core theories and principles that drive health improvement, from behaviour change theories to health protection strategies. Whether you're passionate about mental wellbeing, reducing health inequalities, or improving quality of life, this module helps you connect the dots between evidence-based approaches and real-world impact.
You¿ll dive into both `bottom-up¿ community-led initiatives and `top-down¿ policy-driven interventions, learning how each plays a role in shaping public health outcomes. Alongside this, you¿ll examine key concepts in infection control, outbreak management, and environmental health threats, gaining insight into how public health professionals respond to challenges in both primary care and wider community settings.
By the end of the module, you¿ll be equipped to evaluate health promotion campaigns that are grounded in theory and tailored to diverse populations. You¿ll also develop a deeper understanding of the determinants of health and how to apply your knowledge to protect and promote health across different contexts. If you're ready to become a proactive force in public health, this module gives you the tools to lead with confidence and clarity.
Essentially this module aims to develop a critical understanding of public health principles to PREVENT, PROMOTE and PROTECT population health.

The module is designed to develop knowledge and skills in public health practice and primary health care. Underpinning concepts and approaches to public health practice and the role of public health in primary health care will be critically examined. Collaborative ways of working between sectors will be explored within the above context in order that students can plan and evaluate strategies for the improvement of health of individuals, groups and local populations.

Psychology of Healthcare Management
This module explores the psychology of human behaviour within the workplace. It will use concepts from social, health and organizational psychology to examine principles such as group dynamics, motivation and individual differences in relation to management, structure and behaviour in health care organisations. Central issues will include intergroup behaviour and conflict, psychological well-being at work and enhancing performance. Current topics such as the use of technology, changing concepts of careers and the worth of psychometric testing will be debated. Specifically, students will reflect on the role of health care managers in promoting productive employee relations and well-being, managing difficult behaviour and personalities, increasing staff motivation and considering issues of equality and diversity.

Dissertation (Health Care Management)
Students will choose their own area of study, in consultation with study supervisor, and in accordance with the aims of the award. Students will be encouraged to attempt a project-based, business-planning project while maintaining high academic standards in their research. However, students may also opt for a more theoretical exploration of an area of relevance to health care and health care management.

Research Evidence and Evaluation for Health Care Management
This module will equip you with the knowledge and skills to critically engage with the research process, from collating and appraising evidence to synthesising findings in ways that directly inform health care decision-making. You will develop a strong understanding of how to evaluate research with rigour and how to apply insights to both strategic and operational challenges within health care organisations.
Designed with a practical and applied focus, the module enables youto gain hands-on experience in gathering, analysing and interpreting evidence. It encourages you to assess the quality and relevance of research in order to make informed, evidence-based decisions that improve health service delivery and outcomes. Through these activities, you will build a robust foundation in evaluation methods, preparing you for real-world challenges faced by health care leaders.
The module also provides essential preparation for the MSc dissertation. You will strengthen your ability to design and critique evaluation processes, ensuring that you are well-equipped to undertake independent research projects.
