Psychology of Health and Wellbeing: Theory and Applications
This module looks at how physical and mental health is affected by people¿s behaviours, their motivations, and wider social and environmental influences. The module draws on a range of perspectives from the individual through to the environmental (such as personal motivation, civic engagement, and the wider ecological context) and looks at how these shape health outcomes. The course is structured around three themes: intrapersonal (individual), interpersonal (community), and extrapersonal (environmental). Through these levels, students explore health and wellbeing, including chronic illnesses, through the lens of social cognitions, psychosocial interventions, and resilience. For example, it explores how motivation and social-cognitive interventions influence health behaviour, and how health is connected to wider issues like the climate emergency (the latter using an intersectional approach that considers more than just personal or social factors). By combining theory with practical approaches, this module aims to prepare students for careers that deal with the complex links between individual behaviours, community dynamics, and environmental factors in health and wellbeing. This approach offers an in-depth exploration of how behaviours, the broader community and environmental contexts influence health and wellbeing, exploring specific aspects and applications as the course progresses.

Psychology of Health: Theory and Applications
The module addresses the psychology associated with vulnerability to and protection from chronic physical disease. The narrative across the module begins with consideration of motivational issues associated with health-related behaviors. It then considers issues of adaptation to illness such as stress and coping, and psychological interventions for reducing distress and promoting wellbeing.
This module is particularly suited to students who want to pursue a career as a health professional.

From Individuals to Society
This module explores major theories and empirical issue in the areas of social psychology and individual differences. It focuses on the study of how individuals differ from each other (such as personality traits) and how individual and social factors affect behaviour (such as ethnocentrism, group performance and pro-social behaviour). Classical and contemporary theory and research relevant to a range of social psychological and individual difference issues are explored such as group behaviour, attitudes, and personality. Social psychology content is structured under the broad thematic umbrellas of intra-personal (individual-level) and inter-personal (group-level) processes. In exploring individual differences, the module looks at issues such as behavioural genetics, personality and intelligence. In examining the person in the social context, the module explores individual motivation in the form of attitudes and evaluations. The module addresses key questions such as `How do attitudes influence our behaviour?¿, `What is the contribution of nature vs. nurture to individual differences?¿, and `What makes people aggressive?¿

Independent Research Project
Students conduct an independent research project under the supervision of a member of staff. The research topic is decided in conjunction with supervisors and Research topics. Students must design, conduct, analyse and write up a piece of research in order to achieve Graduate Basis for Chartership with the British Psychological Society (BPS). They must also complete an Ethical Considerations Form, showing that they have considered and resolved ethical issues relating to their project, and that they have implemented appropriate best practices for improving the reproducibility of their research.

Psychology of Building a Better World
We live in times when societal problems (e.g., public health issues, climate change, disinformation attempts to disrupt democratic processes) are ever more present. But it is possible to build a better world - that is, healthy individuals and groups, societies adapted to climate change, and people capable to tell fact from falsehood or disinformation. In a world like that, people need to care about one another and about the truths and they need to comply with authorities¿ decisions to safeguard their health/life, such as pandemic responses or climate change mitigation measures. How can we get people to act prosocially or work together to comply with recommendations to preserve their health, vote for trustworthy political candidates, protect the environment, defy police brutality and racism, or have difficult conversations around inequality? How easy or hard is it to change behaviour at the individual or the group level? And how can we maintain behaviour change? This module will develop how psychology can inform us how to build a better world.
Society continually faces large-scale problems e.g. related to public health, politics and the environment. To face these challenges people need to care about one another, to act in ways that safeguard themselves and others, and to follow the recommendations that are made by experts based on solid evidence rather than being influenced by misinformation. This module explores the role of psychology in promoting prosocial (and challenging antisocial) behaviour, in collecting and communicating the evidence needed to change the behaviour of individuals and/or groups, and in maintaining behaviour change in the long-term. In short, this module will develop your knowledge and understanding of how psychology can help us to build a better world.
