This module will examine foundation sciences needed to understand occupational engagement throughout the lifespan. This module explores fundamental sciences linked to the human body and behavioural sciences relevant to understanding occupations. Learners will explore fundamental concepts of human anatomy, physiology, psychology and sociology. This module is designed to help understanding of occupational interruption in later modules.

Occupational Concepts for Wellbeing and Practice 1
This module introduces learners to some of the fundamentals of occupational theory and thinking that underpin the practice of occupational therapy. The module will introduce and explore occupational science and specific theoretical concepts that guide occupational therapists and how they work. This will include models of practice and practical skills that inform occupational thinking such as occupational analysis. With a focus on the person as an occupational being, this module will prepare learners for later models that examine the consequences of occupational interruption or non-participation.

This module introduces learners to some of the fundamentals of occupational theory and thinking that underpin the practice of occupational therapy. The module will introduce and explore occupational science and specific theoretical concepts that guide occupational therapists and how they work. This module examines how common biological, psychological, sociological and environmental factors can prevent or interrupt participation in the central occupations of the life cycle, and the impact on people of being unable to engage in occupations. It considers how occupational therapy may enable occupational participation by applying concepts from occupational therapy theory and occupational science. The module will examine how evidence-based core skills may be used by the occupational therapist, with emphasis given to assessment and planning stages of professional problem solving. Partnership working with other professionals and agencies alongside the person and their caregivers / families will be explored.

It explores the occupational impact on people of these multifaceted factors and examines how occupational therapy may enable occupation participation by applying concepts from occupational therapy theory and occupational science in a range of settings. The module will analyse how evidence-based core skills may be used by the occupational therapist, with emphasis given to intervention and evaluation stages of professional problem solving. Some volunteering time will form the basis for examining the potential of a new occupation as part of an occupational intervention. Partnership working with other professionals and agencies alongside the person and their caregivers / families will be explored.

This module considers how individuals can work constructively as part of an interdisciplinary or interagency working environment. The essential role of effective and skilled professional communication as a means of service delivery and inter disciplinary collaboration will be discussed. Understanding the roles of contributory team members and other disciplines will be used to encourage positive joint working for the benefit of people using services, their caregivers and families, and for colleagues as part of a healthy workplace. The module will include opportunities to explore team working with learners and colleagues from other disciplines.

This module encourages understanding of the potential contribution of human occupation in enhancing public health and wellbeing at group and community levels. The learning will consider occupational science and occupational therapy theory and translate its benefits and potential for occupational therapists working within community settings in local, national and international contexts. The module will encourage examination of the importance of social participation, social inclusion and the potential of co-production through the medium of occupational practice. It will introduce the potential for occupational therapists to embrace systems working with influential stakeholders including funding agencies and policy makers towards impacting on the lives of people in groups and communities, including those at the margins of the mainstream.
