This module provides an introduction to the profession of nursing, its core concepts and its underpinning values as expressed in the HCSW Code (2011) and the NMC The Code (2018). The module aims to develop the student¿s knowledge of nursing theory and the socio-political dimensions of nursing. It aims to enable the student to understand their role in providing safe and effective care across the lifespan and all four fields of nursing, which is underpinned by professional attitudes and promotes partnership working with service users and their carers.

And yes, you will get hands-on. This module will develop your knowledge, clinical reasoning, and the practical skills needed to safely assess, prioritise, and manage adults experiencing acute illness or rapidly deteriorating health in unscheduled and emergency care environments. You¿ll explore the complexities of acute nursing care, including systematic patient assessment, clinical decision making, pharmacological management, and escalation of care to support safe, effective, and person-centred practice.
You¿ll critically examine the application of evidence-based practice, pathophysiology, and multidisciplinary team working when responding to dynamic and unpredictable clinical situations. The module integrates theoretical learning with simulation-based education and practice placement experience, support you to develop the advanced clinical assessment skills you¿ll need, including the application of structured assessment frameworks such as the ABCDE approach.
