EG-121
Surveying and Introductory Highways Design
This module introduces construction and geometric design of highways, such as the hierarchy of roads, design speed selection and the horizontal and vertical alignment of such roads. The module also covers most aspects of land surveying, from basic methods to those involving modern technologies, with a particular focus on how that relates to road design and construction. Aspects of sustainability in highway design and health and safety consideration in surveying activities will be covered. This module includes a field trip to be held in May 2026.

Conceptual Design and Communication
This module is the first of two Civil Engineering design modules in first year, and addresses fundamental concepts within the topic of conceptual Design and analysis in the context of Civil Engineering. Teaching will combine conventional lecture sessions, computer lab work, and example classes. The module brings together the principals and practice of graphical communication (hand sketching, engineering drawing and computer modelling), civil engineering concept development, structural analysis, an understanding of the use of key civil engineering materials and structural elements (e.g. Steel, Concrete, Timber, Masonry), and calculation of forces on structures as part of the conceptual design development process.

EG-159
Conceptual Design and Analysis
This module develops fundamental skills for the design and analysis of civil and structural engineering projects. It integrates previous knowledge of key civil engineering materials and the design of structural elements (e.g. Steel, Concrete, Timber, Masonry), alongside basic structural analysis skills and software use. The lecture content will build on and reinforce fundamental structural analysis taught in EGA126 in Civil Engineering contexts, while workshop sessions will use a project to integrate the knowledge into practice. Teaching will combine conventional lecture sessions, example classes, and workshops. The content of this module directly builds on the content covered in the first-year first semester module EG-157.

EG-199
Transportation Engineering and Surveying
Effective transportation planning, infrastructure design and accurate surveying are essential for creating safe, efficient, and sustainable transport systems that meet the needs of society. This module introduces students to the principles and practices of transport planning, highway and rail design and surveying, highlighting their interrelated roles in delivering infrastructure projects. Students will develop the ability to analyse transport modes, make informed design decisions about transportation options and evaluate projects using appropriate appraisal methods. Practical surveying skills are developed to support accurate data collection and the preparation of reliable survey information for design and planning purposes. The module also features a residential fieldtrip, giving students the opportunity to apply their surveying skills in a realistic, hands-on scenario that simulates professional practice.

Civil Engineering Design Practice & Management
Civil Engineering projects are amongst the most complex projects you can find in any sphere of work. An understanding of the different elements of a project from conceptual design through to construction requires consideration of design efficiency, buildability and effective risk management. This module will cover a number of design elements such as civils, superstructure and foundation design, together with consideration of the practicality of project delivery. The design teaching develops on existing knowledge of design, promoting the use of industry standard analysis packages as well as methods of sustainability assessment and approaches to net zero carbon. The design work is also linked with typical construction activities such as programming, method and site logistics to provide students with realistic experiences of the whole project.

EG-M360
Integrated Industrial Project - Preliminary Design
This module enables students to undertake a real-life group project defined by the industry. In the first instance, students will interact with industry project advisers to understand the project brief, identify project constraints and define design/project delivery requirements. Students will then produce effective solutions to meet the project needs, going through the typical project delivery stages, taking responsibility for key decisions along the way.

EG-M390
Integrated Industrial Project - Technical Design
This module enables students to undertake a real-world, industry-defined group project. Building on the preliminary design work completed as a part of module EG-360, Integrated Industrial Design ¿ Preliminary Design, students will first ensure that the selected design concept is spatially coordinated with project delivery requirements and any additional information provided by industry partners. They will then develop detailed technical design solutions to meet the project needs.

Civil Engineering Tutorials: Year 1
This module covers the academic tutorials held in Year 1 of the Civil Engineering programme, based around 6 individual or group tutorials held during the year. The tutorials are an important aspect of the degree course as they help students to reflect on their academic performance and explore ways to gain new skills that will help them in their studies and their future careers. Although this module carries no credit, there is a pass/fail assessment of the students' engagement in the tutorial process, which must be passed to progress to the next year of study.

Civil Engineering Tutorials: Year 2
This module covers the academic tutorials held in Year 2 of the Civil Engineering programme, based around 6 individual or group tutorials held during the year.
