History, Memory and the Creation of Identity
In most human societies, history and memory are important in the creation of identity. For example, consider how recent political debates often involve debates about the relevance of particular strands of history (such as `empire¿) to modern society. This module explores these relationships from the ancient societies of Egypt, Greece, and Rome to the modern world. It is designed to provide Foundation Year students intending to pursue degrees in Classical Studies, Ancient History, Ancient History & Egyptology, American Studies, Medieval Studies, or History with an opportunity to reflect critically on what the past means and how we go about studying it.

Dissertation
This module is the exciting culmination of your Masters¿ degree in History. In this module you have the opportunity build on the analytical and research skills developed in Part I of the programme to produce a 20,000-word dissertation on a historical research topic of your choice.
Working under the guidance of an academic supervisor, you will identify and refine a research question, critically evaluate relevant primary and secondary sources, and construct a coherent, well-substantiated historical argument. The project reflects an advanced level of conceptual understanding and methodological rigour, characteristic of independent postgraduate research.

Bydd y modiwl yma yn ffocysu ar Rhyfel Cartref America, un o ddigwyddiadau ffurfiannol yr Unol Daleithiau sydd dal a¿i effaith i deimlo heddiw. Mae¿r themau a drafodir yn cynnwys caethwasiaeth, cenedlaetholdeb, hanes filwrol, personoliaeth a dylanwad Lincoln, a dylanwad y rhyfel ar y Cymry Cymraeg. Bydd y cwrs felly yn trafod amryw o agweddau ar y Rhyfel Cartref, a cefnogi hwn gyda thrafodaeth o ffynonellau cynradd.
Gan ddechrau yn yr 1850au a cynnig amlinelliad o wlad a gwleidyddiaeth yr Unol Daleithiau, bydd y cwrs yn symud ymlaen i drafod gwahaniaethau rhwng y Gogledd a¿r De a¿r rhesymau am ddechreuad y rhyfel. Ar ol trafod ystod eang o themau a hanes milwrol y rhyfel, daw¿r cwrs i ben wrth amlinellu effeithiau¿r rhyfel a¿r Adluniad (Reconstruction).
Bydd profiad pobol Duon, yn cynnwys caethwasiaeth a¿u profiad nhw o¿r rhyfel, yn thema ganolog trwy gydol y cwrs. Byddwn hefyd yn ystyried yn agos profiad y Cymry o¿r rhyfel, yn adeiladu ar waith Jerry Hunter a Gethin Matthews a chymryd mantais o¿r dewis eang o ffynonellau cynradd sydd ar gael yn y Gymraeg. Felly ynghyd a chynnig styriaeth ddwfn o un o ddigwyddiadau pwysicaf hanes America, bydd y cwrs hefyd yn annog ystyriaeth o¿r hanes yma o safbwynt Cymraeg a Chymreig.

The Practice of History
The purpose of the module is to encourage you to think more deeply about how historians work and, in particular, about how we as historians can locate and use primary historical sources effectively as a means of interpreting and understanding the past. During the module we will learn about the survival of historical evidence, how it is organised and made accessible to historians to undertake their research, and how to effectively locate and interpret it in your studies. We will consider how the process of doing historical research changes over time, in particular with the impact of recent developments like digitization.
At the core of the module will be the work you undertake with others in your seminar group using a range of primary sources which your seminar tutor will introduce to you. As part of the module assessment you will also undertake your own primary source based research project using items from these collections. The module is designed strengthen your analytical skills and to help prepare you for the more extensive uses of primary evidence which you will encounter in final year special subjects and dissertation.

History Work Placement
This module enables students to gain professional work experience in a setting that is typical of the types of graduate careers that History students pursue. Placements are expected to offer graduate level work with the possibility (where relevant) of students being allocated to a specific project within the workplace. Prior to beginning their placement, students will complete a series of workshops that will introduce various professional skills, explore the range of History graduate careers and the skills and attributes they are developing as part of their degree, and offer opportunities to reflect on their own personal development, self-awareness and mindset in relation to future career goals. This will be supplemented by practical workshops during the placement period to develop skills in writing CVs, applications and personal statements, interviews, and reflective practice. Teaching will be tied in to the SEA award allowing students to complete appropriate levels of the award (bronze and silver).

The Global First World War
To what extent (if at all) did the First World War transform modern societies? This module engages with this key question by examining the totality of the First World War ¿ a conflict viewed by many as the first `total war¿ - and its impact on the modern world. The causes, course and consequences of the conflict are explored though a range of approaches: military, political, economic, social, cultural, technological, moral and legal.

Y Rhyfel Mawr trwy lygaid y Cymry
Bydd 'Y Rhyfel Mawr trwy lygaid y Cymry' yn cynnig arolwg eang o ddylanwad y Rhyfel Mawr ar bobl Cymru, ac ar ddiwylliant Cymreig a Chymraeg. Ni fydd yr astudiaeth yn cyfyngu ei hunan i ddigwyddiadau 1914-18, ond yn hytrach bydd yn trafod y cyfnod o 1880 i'r presennol. Byddwn yn cychwyn trwy edrych ar sut oedd y Cymry yn edrych ar eu safle yn y byd yn y degawdau cyn y Rhyfel, ac yn ystyried effaith yr ymladd ar feddylfryd y Cymry ar y pryd, ac yn y degawdau ers y cadoediad. Wrth astudio sut mae'r Rhyfel wedi cael ei bortreadu a'i gofio yn y Gymraeg byddwn yn dadansoddi sut mae¿r newidiadau yn y coffáu yn adlewyrchu¿r sefyllfa g yfredol yng Nghymru.

The History dissertation is a free-standing, 40-credit module that runs across both semesters of Level Three. Candidates conduct research upon a subject of their choice, devised in consultation with a member of staff teaching for the degrees in History, and concerning a topic that falls within staff research and teaching interests.

Global Challenges and the Historian
What are the historical roots of the climate crisis? Why has poverty proven so difficult to eliminate? Why do epidemic diseases continue to resurface? Will AI eventually replace historians? These are just some of the pressing questions explored in this module. Here at Swansea we believe that history provides essential tools for understanding the present. This module invites you to examine how insights from the past can help contextualize and address the complex global challenges we face today. You will be encouraged to reflect on your role as an emerging historian and to develop skills that will enable you contribute to contemporary debates.
Through a series of workshops across the semester, you will also develop practical skills in communicating historical knowledge and arguments to diverse audiences. Activities may include writing for the public, drawing up policy briefings, drafting podcast episodes, or create content for, and design, educational resources. Drawing on the rich research expertise of staff across the History and Heritage department, and inspired by the UN Sustainable Development Goals, this module explores themes such as poverty, famine, disease, gender inequality, climate change, and education, and more. It spans a vast range of historical periods and regions, asking you to think creatively about why history matters. By thinking collaboratively with fellow students and with expert researchers in the department, you will deepen your understanding of history¿s relevance in the modern world and enhance your ability to engage broad audiences. At its core, this module challenges you to consider how your study of history can shape your identity as a global citizen.

Yma yn Abertawe credwn fod hanes yn darparu arfau hanfodol sy¿n ein helpu i ddeall y presennol. Making Modern Europe, 1789 to the Present
How did modern Europe come into being? From the flames of the French Revolution in 1789 to the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, you will meet the people behind these monumental events and study the worlds they lived in through a diverse range of voices. In this module, we trace the historical background of such extreme developments in European political, social and economic history from the French Revolution to the present day. We will cover a range of `extreme¿ events that shaped modern and contemporary European history from revolutions (the French, 1848 and Russian Revolutions) to wars (the Napoleonic Wars, the First and Second World Wars and the Cold War) to social movements (feminism, anti-racism). In addition, we will study longer-lasting processes that led to radical social, political and economic changes, including Enlightenment, the rise of the nation state, industrialisation, scientific and technological innovation, empire and colonisation, political violence and political extremism, and decolonisation and race. This module will not only equip you with crucial knowledge about key events and developments in modern and contemporary European history, but it will help you develop the pivotal skill to identify, examine and evaluate historical change over a period of some two hundred years from the French Revolution to the end of the Cold War. This includes the formation of crucial democratic institutions and values, none of the which were inevitable and many of which are under threat today. Ultimately, this module will help you understand current events in Europe such as the rise of extreme political parties and place them within longer-standing developments and historical contexts, including the rise and demise of the welfare state and globalisation.
