Provides further essential mathematics for undergraduate physics at Level 2 and beyond
This module introduces the fundamental concepts and techniques of quantum field theory (QFT) and their application to modern particle physics. It covers the canonical quantization of fields, the Dirac equation, gauge theories, and interactions, while also exploring contemporary particle physics topics, including neutrino oscillations, the Higgs mechanism, and open questions in the Standard Model. Students will develop a strong conceptual understanding, practical calculation skills, and the ability to critically evaluate theoretical frameworks and experimental data. The module emphasises accessible, applied QFT suitable for students new to field theory while maintaining rigor appropriate for postgraduate study.
