This course provides an introduction to the principles of statics, dynamics and thermo-fluid mechanics relevant to engineering. A practical component will be used to complement taught theory.
This module introduces the fundamental principles of chemistry to engineers, alongside the practice of analytical chemistry and its applications. Students will first cover essential numerical and chemical foundations, including the use of mathematics and units, molarity, balancing equations, and reaction yield. Core chemical concepts such as atomic and molecular structure, bonding, kinetics, thermodynamics, equilibria, and reactions of organic compounds are then developed, with practical laboratory work used to reinforce learning. The module also provides an introduction to analytical chemistry, focusing on both qualitative and quantitative methods. Students will gain experience of key instrumental techniques, including gravimetric, titrimetric, separation, and spectroscopic methods, and will apply these approaches to the analysis of chemical systems. Together, these elements provide a broad grounding in chemical principles and laboratory practice, forming a foundation for further study in chemical engineering.
