Course Overview

Biomedical Science is the integrative scientific study of biological issues related to the diagnosis and treatment of various conditions that affect peoples’ quality of life, encompassing a holistic and life-span approach to the provision of diagnostic assessment and intervention.

This programme will explore the theoretical and practical aspects of Cellular and Molecular Pathology, using a blended learning approach that utilises a mix of on-campus teaching and online learning approaches. This innovative approach will further support the development of your learning experience alongside the delivery of key practical laboratory skills and your professional practice development.

Designed for graduates of medical science or health related degrees who wish to specialise, as well as Biomedical Scientists who want to advance their career options, our MSc Biomedical Science (Cellular and Molecular Pathology) course will develop your knowledge in the processing and analysis of tissue and cell samples, and how their clinical interpretation is used to direct patient management and treatment.

You will also explore concepts involved in the use and application of existing and emerging molecular pathology diagnostics in Biomedical Science, including genomic and proteomic approaches, to diagnose and study complex diseases.

The programme has a strong emphasis on practical application and real-world case studies, and is designed to provide you with the skills and confidence to excel in the field of biomedical science, with a range of transferable skills including creative problem-solving, evaluation, independent learning and working, planning and organisation, research and practical laboratory skills.

Why Biomedical Sciences (Cellular and Molecular Pathology) at Swansea?

You will benefit from access to state-of-the-art facilities at our £100million Institute of Life Science (ILS) building, including our Clinical Imaging Suite, with adjoined 3T MRI and high-resolution CT imaging. Our teaching is delivered in partnership with NHS Biomedical Scientists, bringing relevant experience to your studies and a close working relationship between Swansea University and the NHS in Wales, providing ideal circumstances for collaborative teaching and research. We also have strong links with the UK Research Council, Welsh Government and numerous national and international connections.

Your Biomedical Sciences (Cellular and Molecular Pathology) Experience

There are a number of topic areas covered within our programme that will allow you to develop and enhance your specialist knowledge of cellular and molecular pathology via a case study approach to analyse molecular applications in disease, and explore technical advances in molecular pathology analysis, including digital PCR and microvesicles. Practical considerations of sample preparation for molecular analysis and common molecular diagnostic techniques such as in situ hybridization will also be explored.

Entry Requirements

We consider all applicants on their own merits and welcome applications from students with a wide range of qualifications.

Careers and Employability

This course has been designed to provide you with a challenging, but enriching, academic experience that is geared towards you developing a career in Biomedical Science and Life Sciences, across both public and private sectors.

This course will equip graduates with the attributes and abilities to undertake continued study, highly skilled employment or gain access to the professions. This will include healthcare, biomedical science and life sciences in Wales and beyond.

By instilling both biomedical scientific skills and transferable professional practice attributes, the course will provide strong foundations that could improve employment prospects and prepare you for life-long learning via continued professional development.

Graduates may wish to make an application for Registered or Chartered Scientist Status (depending on professional experience) with the Science Council and the course will support graduates to make individual applications to become members (depending on professional experience) of the Institute of Biomedical Science as part of the process needed to apply for Trainee Biomedical Scientist posts within the NHS; where they will be able to complete their in-practice training as part of the IBMS Registration Portfolio, leading to registration as a Biomedical Scientist with the Health & Care Professions Council (HCPC). Please note that this course is not currently accredited by the IBMS.
