Why Mechanical Engineering at Swansea?

You will study at our coastal Bay Campus, overlooking Swansea Bay on the edge of the Gower Peninsula, where your learning will be enriched by having direct access to world-class facilities. You will have the opportunity to work in cutting-edge labs like our Dynamics Mechanics Lab, Fluids Lab, and JetCat P120 Engine Test Room. You can also hone your skills with our digital manufacturing and robotics units, ensuring you're always at the forefront of technological advancements.

Our Mechanical Engineering programme doesn't just teach theory; it equips you with practical, hands-on experience that sets you apart in the job market. You will develop your analytical and problem-solving skills while gaining invaluable exposure to real-world engineering challenges.

At Swansea, we have close interaction with large companies such as Tata Steel and Ford, as well as small and medium-sized enterprises. We have worked with Astra-Zeneca, British Aerospace, Qinetiq, GKN, Rolls-Royce, SKF, Freeport, One Steel and Barrick Gold.

Your Mechanical Engineering Experience

This MSc is progressive and practice orientated. You will be able to extend your engineering knowledge through laboratories, simulation, prototyping, design-led activities and a substantial dissertation, while strengthening your communication, teamwork, research skills and professional responsibility. This will prepare you for interdisciplinary practice, leadership roles and progression toward achieving Chartered Engineer status.

Teaching draws on core Engineering Science, and is enriched by topics such as Sustainable Design, Simulation-Based Design, Business Management, Sustainable and Societal Engineering, Applied Energy Systems and Policy, and Advanced Manufacturing Systems. This variety enables you to connect advanced theory to real engineering challenges across sustainability, digital design, energy transition and future manufacturing.

We provide a year-round programme of guest lectures, giving you the opportunity to deepen your knowledge and exposing you to valuable industry insights. You will also have access to our state-of-the-art facilities, including our advanced laboratories, on-site library and dedicated postgraduate work rooms.

Mechanical Engineering Employment Opportunities

Our MSc in Mechanical Engineering equips you with the advanced technical knowledge, analytical capability and professional behaviours required for high-level roles across the engineering sector.

You will learn to interpret complex quantitative and qualitative data, evaluate competing design requirements and make sound engineering judgements in uncertain, multidisciplinary or rapidly evolving contexts.

Through laboratory work, design activities, simulation-based learning, and substantial individual and/or group design projects, you will gain experience in problem-solving, creativity, prototyping, and evidence-based decision-making.

The curriculum encourages you to engage with emerging technologies and global engineering challenges, including digital manufacturing, robotics, sustainable energy systems, circular-economy approaches, and data-driven design. This fosters innovation and entrepreneurial thinking, enabling you to identify opportunities for new products, improved engineering processes or technology-led solutions to industry and societal needs.

As a result, graduates are well prepared for careers in mechanical, manufacturing, energy, transport, automotive and consultancy sectors, as well as for research and technology development roles. You will leave with the initiative, adaptability and professional awareness needed to progress toward Chartered Engineer status, and to contribute confidently to established organisations or new engineering ventures.
