Course Overview

Our BSc in Data Science and Population Health combines the analytical power of data science with the social and health sciences, to address growing complex public health challenges.

You will build the knowledge and skills to analyse and interpret data to uncover patterns, make predictions, and inform decision-making, boasting strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a solid foundation in health and public service delivery.

You will learn to apply tools like machine learning, artificial intelligence, data visualisation and statistical modelling to solve complex problems. The study of these methods is integrated with the population health component of the degree which covers key topics solid grounding in population health topics including epidemiology, demography, public health, and health informatics.

The balance between technical skill and subject knowledge produces graduates who are well-equipped to make an impact in many fields with transferable technical skills and software proficiency for working with and manipulating data.

Why Data Science and Population Health at Swansea?

Our BSc in Data Science and Population Health is designed for students with an interest on combining the analytical power of data science with the social and health sciences to address complex public health challenges.

This interdisciplinary field focuses on using data-driven approaches to improve population health outcomes, inform policy, and drive evidence-based decision-making. You will learn fundamental data science concepts, including data analysis, linked data structures, machine learning, statistical modelling and programming which are critical when working with large health datasets. The population health component covers key topics in public health, epidemiology, digital health, health disparities, social determinants of health, healthcare systems, and policy.

You will be taught by world-leading academics and researchers in the field of health data science, statistics, epidemiology, machine learning and data linkage in healthcare, who have helped build Swansea University’s world-class reputation for research and teaching in science, engineering, and technology. We are also home to the SAIL Databank, a ground-breaking project to allow large-scale mining of Welsh healthcare data within a secure environment.

Your Data Science and Population Health Experience

You will become part of a welcoming and supportive community from day one. Our student-led Population Health Society brings people together through social events, peer support, and opportunities to collaborate beyond the classroom. You will also have access to regular drop-in sessions run by our Student Engagement and Inclusivity Partners, where you can connect with academic staff in a relaxed setting, build your network, share your ideas, and get extra support when you need it.

Data Science is a hybrid area, bringing together concepts and methods from two distinct areas of study, mathematics and computer science, to solve problems using numerical methods. Combining topics such as data linkage, data visualisation, machine learning and artificial intelligence. At Swansea, we have expertise in all these areas, with our excellent teaching staff being actively involved in research related to Population Health.

You will study a range of topics relating to the fields of data science and population health including:

  • Data Structures and Data Linkage
  • Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence
  • Data Visualisation
  • Statistics and Data Analysis
  • Public Health and Epidemiology
  • Health Informatics

Our programme also shares half of its modules with the existing Medical Sciences and Population Health programme.
