Course Overview

Biomedical science is one of the most dynamic and wide-ranging fields in modern science, forming a fundamental pillar of modern medical practice. It underpins everything from safely providing blood products to critically ill patients, to detecting disease outbreaks and screening for early signs of conditions such as cervical cancer.

It plays a vital role in modern healthcare by supporting the diagnosis, mobing, and treatment of disease. Rapid advances in areas such as genomics, immunotherapy, and precision medicine are transforming how healthcare is delivered, increasing the demand for graduates with strong scientific knowledge and practical laboratory skills.

On this course you will build a strong foundation in the core areas of biomedical science including human anatomy and physiology, biochemistry, cell biology and genetics. You will also develop essential study and laboratory skills required for a career in medical science. These core subject areas will prepare you to progress into specialised clinical laboratory areas and professional development.

Why Biomedical Science at Swansea?

This programme is designed to provide you with a comprehensive understanding of human biology and disease, alongside the analytical and technical competencies required in contemporary biomedical settings.

Our teaching is delivered by expert academics across a wide range of biomedical sciences disciplines, many of whom hold Fellowship or Senior Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy in recognition of their excellence in teaching.

A significant number are also members of the Institute of Biomedical Science, ensuring your learning is informed by the latest scientific developments and professional standards.

Your learning will be enhanced by practising, state-registered biomedical scientists who teach alongside our academic staff, bringing real-world expertise directly into the classroom. This means you will benefit from high-quality, practice and research-informed teaching that is directly relevant to future careers in biomedical sciences and beyond.

Your Biomedical Science Experience

Over the three-year BSc programme, you will progressively build your knowledge and skills in biomedical science.

In Year 1, you will develop a strong foundation in the key scientific principles that underpin laboratory specialisms. In Year 2, you will move into clinical disciplines, strengthening your understanding of disease processes through their investigation in a laboratory context.

In your final year, you will complete a capstone research project, developing your independent research and analytical skills. You will also integrate and deepen your understanding across clinical specialisms, while exploring professional practice, emerging innovations in biomedical science, and the role of public health and epidemiology.

The course takes a multidisciplinary approach, allowing you to explore biomedical sciences from the molecular and cellular level through to whole-body systems in health and disease. A modular structure supports this progression, with each year building on the last to ensure the steady development of your scientific knowledge, technical ability, critical thinking, and professional skills.

Careers and Employability

There is strong and growing demand for biomedical science graduates across the UK and internationally. Biomedical scientists play a vital role in healthcare systems such as the NHS and private sector laboratories, where the majority of clinical decisions rely on laboratory-generated data.

This course is designed to equip you with the scientific knowledge, practical skills, and professional attributes needed to understand human health and disease, and to pursue a wide range of careers across healthcare, research, and the life sciences sector.

Graduates from biomedical sciences go on to careers in areas such as healthcare, research, industry, regulation, and education. Typical career paths include:

  • Biomedical/NHS/clinical scientist (with further study/training)
  • Public health services
  • Biotechnologist
  • Forensic scientist (with further study)
  • Medical doctor (with further study of a Graduate Entry Medicine degree)
  • Microbiologist
  • Physician Associate (with further study)
  • Product development or quality assurance in industry
  • Research scientist (may require further study such as a MSc or PhD)
  • Roles in industry, academia, or government laboratories such as Senior Scientist or Technical Expert
  • Regulatory science (e.g., Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), Food Standards Agency (FSA))
  • Scientificwriter
  • Secondary school or Further Education teacher (with further study)
