Mans Jacobsson

Mr. Måns Jacobsson, formerly Director of the International Oil Pollution Compensation Funds (1985-2006) and formerly President of Division of the Stockholm Court of Appeal, is a Visiting Fellow of the Institute. After studies at Princeton University (USA) he studied law at Lund University in Sweden, graduating in 1964. In 2010 he was awarded the King of Sweden’s Gold Medal for significant achievements in the field of maritime law and shipping. 

Måns Jacobsson served as a judge in Sweden at district court and appellate court level 1964-1970. He then worked as legal advisor in the Department for international civil law in the Swedish Ministry of Justice 1970-1981 and was Head of that Department 1982-1984. During his time in the Ministry he prepared legislation on various subjects, mainly in the field of civil and transport law, and represented Sweden in negotiations in a number of intergovernmental organisations. He has also served as an arbitrator.

In 2017, he published a book Five Speeches on Civil Liability for Marine Pollution. In 2015 he published a book (in Swedish) on international liability regimes relating to maritime transport of environmentally hazardous substances and has previously published (together with two co-authors) a book in patent law. He has also published numerous articles in nuclear law, maritime law, law of torts and treaty law. He is member of the Board of Governors of the World Maritime University and was member the Executive Council of Comité Maritime International 2007-2014. He is Visiting Professor at the World Maritime University and at the Maritime Universities in Dalian and Shanghai (People's Republic of China). He is corresponding member of the Argentine Academia Nacional de Derecho y Ciencias Sociales and an Academic Associate of Quadrant Chambers.
