About The Role

We announce a fixed term (11 months at 60% FTE, maternity cover) position of Teaching Fellow in Plant Ecology at the Department of Biosciences at Swansea University. This is a fantastic opportunity to join a vibrant and growing Department and a highly successful team of teaching and research facing academics.

At Biosciences we offer 4 undergraduate degree schemes accredited by the Royal Society of Biology, in biology, ecology and conservation, marine biology, and zoology, and popular taught and research Masters covering a wide range of topics, including our new MSc in Global Biodiversity and Conservation and MSc in Marine Restoration and Conservation. Our department is immersed in the beautiful Singleton Park, facing the beach, and located close to stunning natural areas, including the Gower Peninsula, the Brecon Beacons National Park, and Pembrokeshire, excellent for teaching our field courses. We have great modern facilities, including our new 18m catamaran research and teaching vessel and the UK-leading Centre for Sustainable Aquatic Research (CSAR), with 100% of our Research Environment judged as world or internationally leading by the latest REF evaluation.

In this post, you will be contributing to our BSc and MSc teaching in Terrestrial Ecology, including ecological survey techniques and design, plant identification/ID skills, ecology and conservation of temperate and tropical environments, red list and species recovery plans, domestic and overseas field courses. Our teaching is student-centred, and we aim to form well-rounded ecologists, combining ecological/natural history, quantitative, and applied expertise, to maximise their employability. At Biosciences we are very collegiate, and you will be mentored by experienced academics and become fully integrated into our Department.

The post requires a postgraduate degree in Biosciences and related fields or equivalent experience, capacity for high-quality delivery of teaching and student learning, a commitment to enhancing the overall student experience, and relevant research experience. The role is available from 1st January 2027 or as soon as possible afterwards.

Welsh Language Skills

The Welsh language level required for this role is Level 1 - A little. Level 1 can be reached by completing a 1 hour course.
