EU, EEA and Swiss National students starting their studies in 21/22 who have Citizen’s Rights

EU students starting a course on or after 1 August 2021, must have settled or pre-settled status in the UK under the EU Settlement Scheme to get student finance. This does not apply to students who are Irish citizens. The application deadline for the EU Settlement Scheme is 30 June 2021, but students must have started living in the UK by 31 December 2020. It’s important that students are aware of this requirement before applying for student finance, otherwise they will not be eligible for funding. I live in Wales

Settled Status

EU students with settled status who are ordinarily resident* in Wales can qualify for ‘home’ tuition fee status.

They will receive full undergraduate funding from Student Finance Wales (including tuition fee loan, maintenance loan and maintenance grants where applicable) as long as they have also:

Been ordinarily resident in the UK for 3 years prior to the start of the course.
Been ordinarily resident in Wales on the first day of the first academic year of the course.

They will receive access to the Postgraduate Loan as long as they have also:

Been ordinarily resident in the UK for 3 years prior to the start of the course.
Been ordinarily resident in Wales on the first day of the first academic year of the course.

Pre-Settled Status

EU students with Pre-settled status who are resident in Wales* can qualify for ‘home’ fee status, a tuition fee loan and can access the Postgraduate Loan.

Student Finance Wales students with Pre-settled status and 3 years residency in the UK prior to the start of the course will get access to full support (tuition fees and maintenance support); or if less than 3 years residency in the UK can access tuition fee support only.

I live in England

Settled Status

Pre-Settled Status

EU students with Pre-settled status who are resident in England* can qualify for ‘home’ fee status, a tuition fee loan and can access the Postgraduate Loan.
If you are an undergraduate student living in England with pre-settled status you will qualify for tuition fee support only (no maintenance loan). To qualify for this support, you must also be ordinarily resident in the UK, Gibraltar, EEA and Switzerland for the 3 year period prior to the first day of the first academic year of your course.
Postgraduate students with pre-settled status who are resident in England can access the Postgraduate Loan. To qualify for this support, they must also be ordinarily resident in the UK, Gibraltar, EEA and Switzerland for the 3 year period prior to the first day of the first academic year of your course.

I live in the Republic of Ireland

Provisions in the Common Travel Area Agreement prevent less favourable treatment for Irish Nationals than EU/EEA Citizens. As such:

Irish Citizens will be treated as ‘settled’ as soon as you arrive in the UK – you do not need to apply for settlement via the EUSS.
If you are ‘ordinarily resident’ in the UK and islands for 3 years prior to the first day of the first academic year of your course you will be fully funded by student finance. This means you will receive ‘home’ fee status, access to tuition fee loans, maintenance loans and grants where applicable, and access to the Postgraduate Loan.
If you have less than 3 years of ‘ordinary residence’ in the UK and islands prior to the first day of the first academic year of your course, but your residence has been in Common Travel Area or the in the EEA and Switzerland, you will qualify for ‘home’ fee status and be able to access to tuition fee support only for undergraduate study, and you will be able to access the Postgraduate Loan.

I do not live in the UK

You may be eligible for fee support If you are:

An EU National with protected rights
have lived in the UK, Gibraltar, the EEA and Switzerland for the three-year period prior to the first day of the first academic year of the course
and you’re coming to the UK to undertake a course,

You would need to apply to the UK territory where you are undertaking the course. Please contact the relevant funding provider to discuss your individual circumstances and eligibility.

I do not have Settled or Pre-Settled Status

Certain groups of students may receive home fee status and may be able to access some statutory financial support from student finance. Some examples:

UK Nationals and their family members living in the EEA and Switzerland.
Family members of UK nationals living in the UK.
UK and EU nationals resident in Gibraltar.
UK nationals resident in the other British Overseas Territories.
Students living in the Crown Dependencies.

NHS Degree Funding

EU students starting courses on or after 1 August 2021 must have settled or pre-settled status in the UK under the EU Settlement Scheme to get funding under the NHS Bursary Scheme. Please see our NHS Funding webpages for more information on funding your NHS course.
