Course Overview

Contemporary finance and business are underpinned by mathematics. Our BSc degree in Mathematics for Finance reflects the close connection between mathematics and industry.

Throughout your studies you will develop a solid grounding in the fundamental concepts of pure mathematics and applied mathematics, as well as stochastic processes and stochastic analysis, which are central for applications to finance.

Your learning will be shaped by inspirational and internationally-renowned academics who have expertise in a range of topics, and you will study in bespoke teaching spaces, designed by, and for, mathematicians.

You will investigate the number theory studied by Pythagoras and the financial mathematics depended on every day in Wall Street, with strong analytical skills, logical reasoning and quantitative thinking, building a highly desirable set of graduate attributes that will set you apart in the employment marketplace.

This course also offers you the opportunity to study with a Year Abroad or a Year in Industry.

Your Mathematics for Finance Experience

You will benefit from dedicated learning and teaching spaces, set within the world-class £32.5m Computational Foundry and developed specifically for mathematicians. Facilities include a Mathematics Reading Room, a hub for studying and group work, a departmental library of resources for learning and research, and a networking space for student socialising.

You will be taught by experts in their fields, and will receive personalised support throughout your studies, through small-group tutorials and a peer mentoring scheme to help you as your start your course.

Mathematics boasts an active student society, the Swansea University Mathematics Student Society (SUMSOC), hosting frequent social and academic events to bring students and staff together.

This programme includes opportunities to undertake a Year Abroad, enhancing your learning and offering invaluable life experience, and a Year in Industry, in the UK or overseas, enabling you to gain valuable workplace experience. The University advocates for paid-only placements, which on average have a salary of over £20,000. Unpaid placements are considered on a case-by-case basis.
