Carol Vorderman Maths Access Bursary

The Department of Mathematics at Swansea University is excited to offer nine Carol Vorderman Maths Access Bursary (worth £2000), to applicants for our undergraduate degree programmes in Mathematics or Actuarial Science who will start their studies with us in September 2024.

We invite applications for this bursary from all UK applicants for full-time undergraduate programmes in Mathematics or Actuarial Science who will join Swansea in September 2024. Applications will be assessed by a selection panel, which will take into account both the background of applicants and answers to a series of questions about motivation for studying at university, ideas for inspiring others to enjoy mathematics, and career aspirations. Reflecting Carol’s background and interests, applicants from Wales or/and from disadvantaged backgrounds are particularly encouraged to apply.

Carol was born in Wales and went to a state-funded school in Prestatyn and then, inspired by her mathematics teacher, read Engineering in Cambridge as one of only a few female students at that time. Carol shared her passion for mathematics with the whole country when she became a TV presenter on the very popular Countdown TV programme in 1982, where she stayed for 26 years. Since then, Carol has continued inspiring young people, teachers, and parents to enjoy mathematics through her talks, books, and charitable work.
