Course Overview

On our new Modern Languages degree with a year abroad, you can study one, two or three languages, helping you to become part of a global community and opening doors to a wide range of careers.

As well as developing your language skills in French, German or Spanish, you will also study culture, education and translation via our dedicated and unique pathways.

You will also spend a year abroad, either on a paid work placement or studying in one of our partner institutions – an exciting and valuable opportunity, which will further boost your student experience and your employment prospects.

Why Modern Languages at Swansea?

Based on our stunning Singleton Park campus, in parkland overlooking Swansea Bay on the edge of the Gower Peninsula:

  • You will be taught by research experts who specialize in film, gender studies, medieval and early modern literature, theatre studies and translation
  • You will have an academic mentor who will provide you with any support you may need
  • You can meet exchange students at weekly language cafés to chat in the languages you are studying
  • You have the option to study some modules in Welsh
  • Modern Languages is ranked Top 20 for Career Prospects in the Guardian University Guide 2021
  • German is ranked 8th in National Student Survey (NSS) 2020.

Your Modern Languages Experience

You can study French, German and Spanish from beginners’ level or post-A level (or equivalent).

You will have intensive language tuition and study pathway modules relating to various aspects of society, culture, education and translation and interpreting.

The centrepiece of the degree is the third year spent abroad. You can choose to work as a paid British Council language assistant in France, Germany or Spain (recommended for all on the Education pathway), or study at a partner university, enabling you to spend one semester in one country and one in another.

You can also take paid work placements or work as a volunteer on approved programmes, and there are opportunities in Latin America for students of Spanish.

Modern Languages Employment Opportunities

This degree can open doors to exciting career oportuniites in the UK and internationally.

Our graduates have careers in:

  • education
  • translation and interpreting
  • journalism, media and public relations
  • government, politics and humanitarian organisation
  • business and commerce
  • public services

We also accept a range of advanced level qualifications including: International Baccalaureate 32; Welsh Baccalaureate - grade equivalent to A-level; Access to Higher Education and Open University qualifications, and Extended Project.

Here are the requirements for International students.

For applicants whose first language is not English, we require a minimum IELTS score of 6.0.

How You're Taught

Covid 19 Update-Please see the 'Covid Update for Learning and Teaching' expander below.

In the first year of study, you will be taught through a mix of lectures and tutorials. Language classes have between 6-15 people in a group. For pathway modules, these numbers will be higher. You will be assessed via written coursework, essay and examination. Depending on your module selection, you will have 12-15 contact hours per week. We recommend that you carry out one hour of independent learning or revision per contact hour – this can include participation in our language cafés, watching films in the target language at the Taliesin Cinema, or completing homework assignments set by your tutors.

In the second year, you will learn through guided seminars and group-work exercises. Assessment will be varied and include coursework, essays, group presentations and examinations.

In the final year, in addition to your taught language classes and optional pathway modules, you will also have the opportunity to research a dissertation on the topic of your choice: currently, our staff are supporting students’ dissertations on topics as diverse as the art of subtitling Monty Python’s The Holy Grail, the popularity of veganism in Germany, and the link between Barcelona FC and Catalan identity.

Key skills:

Self-Management (attending classes, meeting deadlines, preparing for seminars, dissertation)

Teamwork (group presentations, group seminars, projects)

Customer awareness (study abroad, internships, work placements, student experience)

Problem solving (essay writing, research, examinations)

Communication and literacy (essays, examinations, presentations, project work, dissertation)

Numeracy skills (data analysis, statistics, graphs, datasets)

Information technology (Blackboard, essays, examinations, presentations, social media)

This course offers some modules taught through the medium of Welsh or bilingually for students who consider themselves to be fluent Welsh speakers. For more details on the provision available see the Welsh Provision expander below.

Covid Update for Learning and Teaching

Covid Update for Learning and Teaching

We have made some changes to the way that we teach this year, with more activities taking place online than usual.

The University calendar runs in teaching blocks. Teaching block one (TB1) runs from September until January and during this block, for this year, you will be taught in a ‘blended’ way. This means that some of your teaching will be delivered online and some will be on campus. The online teaching, where you will be physically apart from your lecturer, can be ‘live’ with your lecturer present and where you’ll be able to interact. Some of it may be self-directed which means that you can access the learning materials at a time to suit you.

Your face-to-face, on campus sessions will be a mixture of:

Programme study groups and workshops

Subject seminars

Study skills workshops

Induction and orientation events

Individual Academic Mentoring meetings

Staff consultation and office hours

Dissertation supervision (Final year and PGT)

Your online learning and teaching may include:

Live streamed lectures

Module seminars, workshops and tutorials

Individual Academic Mentoring meetings

Staff consultation and office hours

Student and staff community events

Dissertation supervision (Final year and PGT)

Self-directed learning will be:

Organised Study Materials

Self-guided study activities

Preparatory and further reading

Recorded lectures

Formative tests and quizzes

Self-study in library

Self-study in PC Labs

Design Group Meetings
