Our Mechanical Engineering programme doesn't just teach theory, it equips you with practical, hands-on experience that sets you apart in the job market.
You’ll be able to develop your analytical and problem-solving skills while gaining invaluable exposure to real-world engineering challenges.
Why Mechanical Engineering at Swansea?
You will study at our coastal Bay Campus, overlooking Swansea Bay on the edge of the Gower Peninsula.
Your learning will be enriched by having direct access to world-class facilities. You will have the opportunity to work in cutting-edge labs like our Dynamics Mechanics Lab, Fluids Lab, and JetCat P120 Engine Test Room. You can also hone your skills with our digital manufacturing and robotics units, ensuring you're always at the forefront of technological advancements.
You will be joining a leading department that is currently ranked:
- 11th for Student Satisfaction (Complete University Guide 2026)
- 14th in the UK Overall (Guardian University Guide 2026)
- Top 20 in the UK for Student Experience (Times Good University Guide 2026)
- Top 20 in the UK for Overall Positivity (NSS 2025)*
- Top 20 in the UK Overall (Daily Mail University Guide 2026)
- 131st in the World (Mechanical, Aeronautical & Manufacturing Engineering) (QS World University Rankings by Subject 2025), and
- 96% of Mechanical Engineering Graduates are in Employment and/or study, or doing other activities such as travelling 15 months after leaving Swansea University (Graduate Outcomes Survey 2025)
*Based on the overall positivity score for questions 1-26 in the NSS 2025, when ranked against universities as featured in the Times Good University Guide.
Your Mechanical Engineering Experience
Teaching on this programme is grounded in the core principles of engineering sciences (mechanics, thermofluids, statics and dynamics, manufacturing and design) and is enriched by the research strengths of the department and wider faculty.
Learning is also progressive and practice-focused. You will build foundational knowledge in the early stages, before applying and extending it through laboratory work, prototyping, simulation and team-based design activities.
The curriculum encourages you to engage with emerging technologies and global engineering challenges, including digital manufacturing, robotics, sustainable energy systems, circular-economy approaches, and data-driven design. This fosters innovation and entrepreneurial thinking, enabling you to identify opportunities for new products, improved engineering processes or technology-led solutions to industry and societal needs.
Computer-based learning is delivered through CAD, simulation and programming workshops using Autodesk tools, MATLAB, Python, and ANSYS for finite element and computational fluid dynamics analysis. These sessions mirror professional engineering workflows, and help you to build competence across modelling, data analysis and digital design.
While some modules purely use traditional examinations where essential, this programme ensures that you also benefit from a wider range of assessment methods that reflect real engineering practice. These include individual and group presentations, design reviews, CAD/FEA tasks, laboratory work, and substantial project-based assessments.
This programme includes opportunities to undertake a Year Abroad, enhancing your learning and offering invaluable life experience.
This course also offers you the opportunity to spend a Year in Industry, in the UK or overseas, enabling you to gain valuable workplace experience. The University advocates for paid-only placements, which on average have a salary of over £20,000. Unpaid placements are considered on a case-by-case basis.
The optional Foundation Year for this programme can give you an exciting introduction to higher education, setting you up with the skills, confidence, and knowledge that you’ll need to be successful in your undergraduate degree. It’s ideal if you need a little more support after further education, or are returning to education after a gap. Following successful completion of the Foundation Year, you will progress onto Year 1 of your degree.
The MEng is a four-year integrated degree that goes beyond the BEng, offering advanced technical and leadership skills, deeper specialisation, and a direct pathway to professional accreditation.
