This module introduces students to a range of key topics, contemporary issues and approaches within the study of humanities, social and life sciences. It offers the opportunity to engage with key debates, theories and literature within humanities, social and life science disciplines, and to develop a foundational understanding of the interdisciplinary nature of the field. It also provides a broad introduction to research concepts, design and skills in the discipline. It prepares students for further study and subject-specific independent research in the second semester module `Research Project¿.

It builds on the semester one module `Living in the Social World¿ by providing students the opportunity to apply what they have learnt through conducting independent research on a discipline-specific topic within Humanities, Social and Life Sciences. Students will be guided through the process of conducting research through a series of lectures, seminars, workshops and individual supervision/support meetings.

Critical Thinking
This module introduces students to critical thinking concepts, which can then be applied to the specific programme pathway students are following. Students will learn to evaluate sources and apply criteria of credibility. They will learn how to build a reasoned argument and to justify their position. This is an interactive course which encourages students to develop a critical thinking disposition and a healthy scepticism when considering sources of information. Students will develop oral presentation skills and written academic skills. They will be able to apply critical thinking skills in all areas of future study.
