Group of people

We are delighted to invite academics, practitioners, students, and anyone with an interest in law and emerging technologies to the launch of Private Law and Intelligent Machines: Continuity and Reform (Hart Publishing, 2026), authored by Professors Barış Soyer and Andrew Tettenborn, members of the Institute of International Shipping and Trade Law at Swansea University, Law School.

The book examines how established doctrines and principles of private law may need to be reconsidered in light of the increasing use of intelligent machines capable of making autonomous decisions. It explores whether existing legal frameworks can accommodate these technological developments or whether meaningful reform will be required.

The authors will be joined by a distinguished panel of academic and practitioner experts: Tom Whittaker (Head of AI, Burges Salmon LLP), Professor Pablo Cortés (University of Leicester), and Dr Peter Underwood (Auckland Law School). Together, they will discuss the book’s principal themes and engage in a wider conversation about the opportunities and challenges that artificial intelligence presents for the future development of private law.

The event will take place online on 11 November 2026 at 12:30 pm (UK time). We would be delighted if you could join us for what promises to be a timely and thought-provoking discussion.
