Student experiences at CSU, USA

Bethan studied at California State University, Fresno, for 1 academic year (2014-2015) as part of her English Literature degree at Swansea University. Here are some of the comments she made about her experience:

"I approached my trip with the desire to improve my social skills, gain a broader knowledge of literature, and to become familiar with education in another country."

 

 

 

 

Favourite Moments

"Being situated in the middle of California, I was lucky enough to be able to travel to Los Angeles and San Francisco on a regular basis, also visiting most other areas within California. I even got to visit the neighbour state of Nevada during a weekend trip to Las Vegas. My favourite moments were visiting Big Sur along the Pacific Coast Highway, road trips around the State and the famous Route 66, and exploring well-known literary spots where legendary writers left their mark. The experience was once in a lifetime to which I remain extremely grateful for. I achieved everything that I set out to, and much more."

Biggest Challenge

"After experiencing somewhat of a culture shock and at some points, isolation, my biggest challenge was finding my feet at a new and daunting place where I was the only British student. I found it difficult being an introvert to involve myself in the customs of outgoing Americans, especially during English classes which were structured as smaller, seminar type meetings. However, professors and fellow students at the university were inviting and encouraging, and it became easier for me to contribute during discussions."

Reflection

"I believe that without my year of study abroad, I would not have had the fortitude or confidence to overcome my anxiety in public speaking and pursue a vocation such as this. I would highly recommend studying abroad, as I credit this year of my life as the most rewarding and pivotal thus far."
