About

A researcher on the EU-funded Research group SEACAMS2 working within research and development alongside industry partners within the marine and coastal sectors, particularly marine renewables.
Over 8 years working as part of a research and development project at Swansea University with extensive experience across marine and coastal research fields, notably coastal engineering and open water. Research focus surrounds environmental impacts of marine renewable energy (MRE) devices and their potential effects on marine and coastal processes and marine mammals.

Particular research projects have included assessing the disturbance off small UAVs on grey seals (Halichoerus gypus), monitoring of intertidal morphodynamics around Swansea Bay, assessing the feasibility of collecting and analysing of cetacean eDNA using blow samples and acoustic tracking of Sea Trout in Swansea Bay.

Specialist expertise in; cetacean acoustic monitoring and boat-based surveys (static and towed methods), UAV's (drone operator), GIS, mapping and aerial imagery, sediment-related heavy metals, sediment transport and storage, floodplain processes and dynamics, geomorphology, flood and coastal risk management, environmental management, and X-Ray Fluorescence.

Member of Biosciences Athena SWAN Charter.

Career Highlights

Teaching Interests

Anouska’s teaching focus is embedding professional skills to both undergraduate and postgraduate students. Particular skills taught include variations in surveys techniques and methods of data collection for monitoring marine mammals including seals and cetaceans, coastal birds and fish. Skills are taught through a series of lectures, case studies (drone research), practical sessions and field courses.

Emphasis is also placed on the introduction of professional and stakeholder management practices including legislative and governmental processes such as Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs) for different environmental ecosystems.

Research

Research focus surrounds using UAVs for novel data collection in coastal morphodynamics and marine mammal studies, such as use of drones for cetacean DNA collection.

Cross-discipline research collaboration with Biosciences and Engineering at both Swansea University and Bangor University as part of the SEACAMS2 project.
