Dr Saber Azizi is a Senior Lecturer in Aerospace Engineering at Swansea University and a former Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions Fellow. Since September 2023, his MSCA research has focused on the design, modelling, fabrication, and testing of MEMS-based bio-mass sensors for the detection of liver cancer biomarkers. As part of this fellowship, his group has recently fabricated and tested a MEMS bio-mass sensor in collaboration with Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands and the University of New South Wales in Australia.

Dr Azizi has extensive experience in the design, fabrication, and characterisation of MEMS sensors and actuators. His research interests include MEMS/NEMS technologies, structural dynamics, vibration analysis, nonlinear behaviour of micro-scale systems, biomedical sensing, and high-sensitivity bio-mass detection. He is particularly interested in developing advanced MEMS devices for health monitoring, biomedical diagnostics, and aerospace-related sensing applications.

His work combines analytical modelling, numerical simulation, experimental testing, and cleanroom-based fabrication to improve the performance, sensitivity, and reliability of next-generation MEMS sensors.

Dr Saber Azizi teaches Dynamics 2 (EG-360) and Rotorcraft (EG-3081) to Aerospace Engineering students. His teaching focuses on advanced structural dynamics, vibration analysis, rotor dynamics, and the practical application of engineering principles to aerospace systems.

Taught Modules

EG-2015 Mechanical Engineering Practice 1

This module deals with the development of hands on experimentation, the comparison of differing experimental result types through computational aided engineering, and report writing. The hands on experimentation aspects of the course introduces the students to experimental studies in a wide range of subjects. There are four individual hands on experiments (HEAT/JET/STRESS/VIBRATION). Each experiment is self contained and the student will be assessed via either: - A lab report. - An online Canvas assessment. Hands on experimental work is scheduled in groups and individuals will carry out four experiments. The assessments are all individually submitted. The students keep a log-book of the experimental observations and results, which is used for reference for the technical report from each experiment written-up in the week after the experiment. The computational aided engineering data aspects are carried out individually, using MATLAB, and Fusion 360 for the computational experimentation, where a digital log-book is to be used to note relevant and important information before a final report is created later in the academic year. This module will revise and develop the student¿s abilities in technical report writing.
EG-238 Experimental Studies for Medical Engineers

The course introduces the students to experimental studies in a wide range of subjects. Each experiment is self contained and the student will present the findings in written form through a lab report which will have a set of experiment specific questions to answer. This written report also forms the basis for the assessment. All students work in groups and carry out five experiments which vary according to discipline, however the assignments are all individually submitted. The students keep a log-book of the experimental observations and results, which is used for reference for the technical report from each experiment written-up in the week after the experiment.
EG-3081 Rotorcraft Theory

Develop an understanding of the theory of vertical flight, design and analysis of helicopters and other rotary-wing aircraft and gain an appreciation of the extra difficulties involved when the vehicle flow is cyclic in nature.
EG-360 Dynamics 2

Building on Dynamics 1, this module introduces the students to matrix analysis in discrete mass-spring damper systems, natural frequencies and mode shapes, principle of orthogonality, normal coordinates, detailed study of 2 degree of freedom systems, higher order systems, forced response, viscous damping, harmonic response, response to general forces, continuous structures, energy methods, displacement models, Rayleigh and Rayleigh-Ritz methods, methods of excitation, transducers, mounting structures, Fourier transforms in forced vibration, aliasing, leakage, FRF estimation, coherence, peak picking, circle fitting, rotordynamics, co-ordinate systems, unbalance and gyroscopic moments, the Jeffcott rotor, whirl, critical speeds, Campbell diagram.
EGA229 Experimental Studies - Aerospace

The course introduces the students to experimental studies in a wide range of subjects relevant to Aerospace Engineering. Each experiment is self contained and the student will present the findings in written form through a lab report (or combination of lab reports and class tests) which will have a set of experiment specific questions to answer. This written reports and class tests also forms the basis for the assessment. All students work in groups and carry out five in-situ experiments and one external experiment, however the assignments are all individually submitted. The students keep a log-book of the experimental observations and results, which is used for reference for the technical report from each experiment written-up within the fortnight after the experiment.
