What Is The Technician's Commitment?

The Technician's Commitment is a sector-wide, collaborative initiative led by the Science Council and supported by the Gatsby Charitable Foundation’s Technicians Make It Happen campaign.

The Commitment aims to ensure visibility, recognition, career development, and sustainability for technical staff working in higher education and research, across all disciplines.

The Commitment includes 4 key areas:

The Technician Commitment at Swansea University

Our commitment to our Technicians

Swansea University acknowledges the crucial contributions that its technicians provide to teaching, research and to the running and maintenance of overall facilities. In alignment with our strategies on people, on research and on education, we are committed to further develop the skills of our technician cohort, to increase the visibility of their roles and contributions, to enable them to access rewarding career opportunities and to ensure the sustainability of their wide skillset.

Our commitment has been formally agreed since March 2002, when we signed up to the Technician Commitment.

Part  of our commitment includes creating a two-year action plan to enhance the career opportunities and skills of our technicians. This also includes recognition for their contributions.

A Technician Commitment Steering Group led by Professor Biagio Lucini and Mark Pritchard comprises of members of the Technician community and Academics and Professional Service leaders.

It's main aims include:

  • Liaising with the University Technician Forum
  • Liaising with other internal stakeholders
  • Meeting with external stakeholders such as the Science Council

Further updates on our commitment to our technicians will appear on this page. If you have a question or query, email  techniciancommitment@swansea.ac.uk
