Our Research Highlights

• 78% of our overall research quality was rated as world-leading or internationally excellent (4*/3*)
• We have a Top 30 UK position for environment quality (in terms of vitality and sustainability) - with 100% of our research environment rated 4*/3* - reflective of a profile conducive to producing research of world-leading and internationally excellent quality. Our inclusivity also improving substantially, as reflected by our increase in gender equality (54% of submitted staff being female)
• Our research income has grown from a total of £1.7m reported in REF2014 to over £2.0m reported in REF2021
• We have grown our PGR cohort from 32 in 2013/2014 to 44 in 2019/2020
• We maintain our proud research culture of a strong record of translating science into real-world consequences, with 100% of our impact rated as internationally excellent.

Our Vision

Our vision is to provide world leading translational psychological research to better understand problems and identify solutions of social importance and inform policy-based debate and legislative change.

Our Environment

Our understanding of psychological processes and our thriving research community is based around two broad research themes; Cognitive Neuroscience and Clinical, Health and Forensic Psychology.  This has led to us being a hub for interdisciplinary research excellence supported by our physical proximity to key partners in Medicine, Health and Life Science.

Our Outputs

Our research appears regularly in online, TV and print media. For instance, over the review period our research has been featured in Charlotte Church - Inside My Brain (BBC, 2018), a CBS/Netflix Documentary – Click for Murder (2017), on the Discovery Channel’s Through the Wormhole with Morgan Freeman (2014), and in numerous radio and TV news, newspaper, and news website features. Our staff regularly feature in BBC and ITV local news and documentary programmes and engage with research end-users and other interested stakeholders via online platforms.

Our Impact

Research within the School of Psychology aims to have an impact on health and wellbeing through pioneering treatment of common physical and mental health conditions and the promotion of novel interventions designed to promote population wellbeing. We gain empirical understanding for societal and policy impact in areas ranging from wellbeing science, obesity and nutrition, gambling and behavioural addiction, forensic and clinical psychology, neuroimaging and cognition.
