We 26 Category A academic staff, with an increase of over 30 academic and research staff during the REF period. There has been a 116% increase in PhDs awarded during the census period. Physics have been awarded £22.5m in grants during the REF period which is an increase of 70% from the previous REF, with overall a 81% increase in research income. The Department were part of the awarded £30m Centre for Integrative Semiconductor Materials (CISM) to Physics, Chemistry and Engineering, which will be integral to the Departments expansion.
The Department’s research output surged to over 800 publications (18 Nature suite) with a field-weighted citation impact score of 1.8, which is 80% above the global average, 194 (24.2%) of which are in the top-10% of most-cited publications, and 437 (64.6%) in the top-10% of journals according to CiteScore.
Oriel Science is taking the research done by Swansea researchers, places it at the heart of the community through exhibits, school visits and a new city centre venue, reaching over 100,000 people since 2016. Our research is developing an effective non-invasive blood test for early detection of bowel cancer, the third most common cancer worldwide. We have developed BSMBench, an open source benchmark code for supercomputers which helps companies evaluate their new hardware products.
