Seven current Swansea University students and three graduates are set to compete at this summer’s Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.
Birmingham 2022 will see a total of 54 countries and 18 territories compete in the international multi-sport event between 28 July - 8 August 2022.
Swimmers from Swansea University selected to represent Team Wales include:
- Lewis Fraser
- Rebecca Sutton
- Liam White
- Medi Harris
- Joseph Small
Nursing graduate Anwen Butten will captain Team Wales at what will be her sixth Commonwealth Games, competing in lawn bowls.
Psychology graduate and Commonwealth champion Alys Thomas will also represent Team Wales in the pool. Alys gained a gold medal and the 200m Butterfly Commonwealth games record in 2018 and later went on to represent Team GB in the 200m butterfly final at the Tokyo Olympics.
Students Panayiotis Panaretos and Sofoklis Mouglis have also been selected to represent Team Cyprus in the swimming events. They will compete in the 100m breaststroke and 100m backstroke, respectively.
Hockey player and economics graduate Jacob Draper will make his Commonwealth Games debut for Team Wales in Birmingham 2022, a year after competing at Tokyo 2020.
Imelda Phillips, Swansea University’s Performance Sport Manager, said: ‘’We are delighted to be congratulating and supporting seven of our current swimmers at Swansea University on their recent selection to represent their country at the Commonwealth Games.
“This is the highest number of athletes that we have had selected for a major championship from our high-performance swimming programme and it is a testament to the dedication and commitment of our student athletes, and the excellent work provided by our coaches, support staff, and Talented Athlete Scholarship Scheme dual career programme. We wish all of them every success at this summer’s Games, at what is an exciting chapter for sport at Swansea University!’’.
