Stronger links with Oman and Qatar were the subject of discussions during a visit by a senior Swansea University delegation to the Cultural Attaches’ offices for both countries in London.

Professor Judith Lamie, Pro Vice Chancellor for International Engagement, led the visit, accompanied by Mohammed Hadia, Regional Head for the Middle East, Africa, Turkey and Pakistan in the University’s International Development Office.

At the Omani office, the Swansea team met with Her Excellency Mrs Abeer Ali Awadh, Omani Cultural Attache, and Mr Mohamed Ali, Head of Finance.

At the Qatari office the team met with His Excellency Mr Fahad Al-Kuwari, Qatari Cultural Attache, and Mrs Reem Al-Sabbagh, Academic Advisor.

Swansea already has links with both the Sultanate of Oman and the State of Qatar, with Omani and Qatari students already studying at the University. The purpose of the visit was for Professor Lamie to be introduced to both Cultural Attaches and to consider how these links could potentially be enhanced.

Areas of further co-operation that were discussed included the support provided to current and prospective students from Oman and Qatar.

Research collaborations in various subjects were also discussed; this is a top priority for Swansea as a research-intensive university which is committed to strong international partnerships.

Professor Judith Lamie, pro vice chancellor at Swansea University, said:

"Swansea’s links with Oman and Qatar are extremely important to us, which is why it was so valuable to be able to meet both Cultural Attaches in London.

Our discussions were very useful and I am confident that they will lead to new opportunities for co-operation, both supporting students and encouraging research collaborations. "
