Health Care Circles is a widening access programme established by Swansea University Medical School in collaboration with Medical Schools Council UK and the Reaching Wider Partnership.

Mentoring

This free programme aims to provide targeted mentoring support during the preparation phase for a career in medicine.  We aim to provide mentoring support to graduate and undergraduate students across Wales who wish to apply for the graduate entry medicine programme at Swansea University. We will also aim to provide mentoring to financially disadvantaged children undertaking A/AS levels in schools across Wales who wish to undertake a career in medicine.

Mentoring will be provided by medical students, clinicians and academics using a monitored virtual platform called Brightmedics. We plan to supplement the virtual mentoring with a limited number of virtual group sessions via Zoom/Teams. Face to face sessions might also be organised if indicated. As this is a pilot programme entry will be restricted and if the programme is oversubscribed contextual criteria will be applied to select the most deserving candidates for mentoring support.

Who can apply for the programme?

In 2023 the pilot programme will target:

  • A maximum of 100 candidates who are undertaking or have completed a degree in Wales and would be eligible to apply for the Graduate Entry Medicine programme in Swansea University over the next 3 years (review our course page for eligibility)
  • A maximum of 50 candidate who are undertaking A/AS Levels in schools in Wales who have a minimum of C in GCSE Maths and English/Welsh
