Swansea University’s LLM programmes continue to attract talented students from across the globe, offering not only academic excellence but also opportunities to develop the professional skills required by leading employers worldwide.

Alongside their studies in areas such as technology, trade, shipping and commercial law, LLM students benefit from a range of employability initiatives, including guest lectures from legal professionals and practical skills training. One of these opportunities is a non-credit bearing Commercial Law Mooting module, designed to help students develop their advocacy, legal research and argumentation skills.

As part of the module, students take part in an internal mooting competition held each March. The competition determines two teams that will go on to represent Swansea University at a prestigious advocacy event in London in June, where they will compete before practising lawyers and arbitrators.

The Swansea stage of the competition has now concluded, with the following students progressing to the final:

Claimants’ Team
Speakers: Wenjie HOU & Varvara KAZANTZI
Researcher: Leanne TOPPIN

Defendants’ Team
Speakers: Michael MULANDI & Mai Linh NGUYEN
Researcher: Aslihan ASMAN ARVAS

The Best Skeleton Award, recognising the strongest written legal submissions, was awarded to: Selin UCUNCU & Qingzhou ZENG

Congratulations to all the students who participated in this year’s competition. Special thanks are also due to the members of staff who generously volunteered their time to serve as judges and support the development of our students’ advocacy skills. In true Swansea fashion, staff and participating students came together after the initial rounds to celebrate with drinks and congratulate those who progressed to the finals.

Mooting and advocacy are particular strengths at Swansea, and each year many teams trained by our talented staff go on to achieve great success in national and international mooting and advocacy competitions.
