Climate change and sustainability education in ALN and alternative provision set

Learners with additional learning needs should have parity of educational opportunities with their mainstream peers. However, a recent report from Swansea University has found that many learners in ALN and alternative provision settings do not have access to climate change and sustainability education. The report has highlighted a number of barriers to CCSE provision in ALN and alternative provision settings including:

  • A lack of tailored resources i.e. no ready-made CCSE resources for ALN learners
  • An absence of specialised networks for teachers from ALN and alternative provision settings
  • Insufficient CCSE staff training available to teachers and teaching assistants in ALN and alternative provision settings.
