Student experiences at USC, USA

Sophie studied at the University of South Carolina for 1 academic year (2016-2017) as part of her American Studies degree at Swansea University. Here are some of the comments she made about her experience: 

The University of South Carolina

"The campus itself was a different world to Swansea, with huge fancy buildings with beautiful architecture, and tower blocks of classrooms much taller than I had imagined...My aim of the trip was to become more confident. I was not particularly shy, but often found it difficult to speak to new people. This aim was fulfilled quickly, as everyone was so friendly and easy to talk to!" 

Biggest Highlights

"As well as Mardi Gras, I went on many other trips. These included hiking in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains in Asheville, North Carolina, a Labour day weekend trip to the picturesque coastal town of Charleston, South Carolina, Thanksgiving in New York City, a fall break week touring Florida, a county music weekend in Nashville, an unforgettable spring break in the Bahamas and Cuba, and finally, a road trip with seven girls, travelling the West Coast and Canada."

Challenges

"The biggest challenge for me was getting over the fact it was not possible to just 'pop home' if I was ever feeling down or just wanted some home comforts. Although I found moving to Swansea easy, the adjustment to living in another continent was quite daunting. Of course, once the first few weeks had passed, Carolina felt like my home away from home."

Reflection

"My year abroad was undoubtedly the best experience of my life and anyone contemplating the trip, all I can say, is DO IT!"
