Student experience in Colorado

Holly spent 1 academic year (2015-2016) studying at Colorado State University as part of her American Studies degree at Swansea University. Here are some of the comments she made about her experience:

Colorado State University at Fort Collins

"Coming to Colorado...I could experience the everyday America that I had always wanted to, while still not being far from a big city. I have found Coloradoans to be amazingly friendly, wonderful people. They are up for any adventure and the experience really made me appreciate the outdoors, with the Rocky Mountains right on campus’s doorstep."

Biggest Highlights

"One of the best decisions I made while at Colorado State University was to join the KCSU News Team. Every Wednesday we create and broadcast a radio show that goes out on Fort Collins soundwaves. Through this I have met some amazing people, I have grown in confidence and have also been able to cover fun news and events that went on around the city which I think made me feel closer to the Colorado community."

Travel

"During spring and Thanksgiving break I was able to explore even more of the States. I have now visiting 10 different States and have been amazed by how wildly different a culture can be just one state over. I have experienced the touristy areas such as California, New York and Orlando, Florida. Although these trips were amazing, I most enjoyed adventures to places such as Salt Lake City, Utah and Cody, Wyoming, because I felt that they demonstrated a side of the United States which is not often depicted in the media."

Reflection

"Coming 4,000 miles away from home for an entire year has definitely been a life changing experience. I have learnt how to appreciate and keep friendships that I had in the UK while also creating new friendships here. I have learnt to take any opportunities that come my way and to think of all of them as potential adventures. Although I certainly missed home comforts and my family, I have had the most incredible year of my life in the States and I know that it has played a huge role in who I am now as a person and the decisions I will make in later life."
