Dan Anlezark - Global Challenges Scholar

Dan Anlezark is a human rights investigator, specialising in open source intelligence (OSINT). Originally from Australia and now based in Swansea, Dan brings to program a wealth of in-country human rights investigative experience across the Middle East and Europe. Professionally, Dan has experience across various investigative and analytical roles within government, business and most recently, the United Nations mandated Group of Eminent Regional and International Experts on Yemen (GEE Yemen).

Educational and Career Background

Dan holds a Bachelor of Politics and International Relations from the University of Canberra, a Master of Peace and Conflict from the University of Sydney and Intelligence Analysis qualifications from Victoria Police.

Dan currently consults across a diverse array of organisations, focusing on open source investigations for human rights accountability. Recently, this has seen Dan deliver investigative training to organisations the likes of the BBC, conduct investigations for Amnesty International and engage in consultancies at the Centre for Information Resilience (CIR), among many others.

Prior to joining the program, Dan worked at both state and federal levels of Australian government, ranging from police and law enforcement to natural resource and environmental management.

Areas of Expertise

Dan will focus on the human rights and technology aspect of the Global Challenges Program, applying his experiences with leveraging open source information for the purposes of investigating international crimes. Dan is passionate about accountability and intends to use his time as a Global Challenges Scholar to formalise his professional practice into a research output for the collective benefit of human rights investigators, researchers and activists.

Specifically, Dan is producing a research output on best-practice application of open source investigative techniques to the assessment of source credibility and testimony reliability in the investigation of international crimes. 

Ambitions and Hopes for the Future

"After completing this program, I intend to leverage my open source investigative skills to continue promoting accountability for international crimes. I also hope to formalise my experiences in this field through a legal accreditation.”
