Civil Engineering

We prepare our Civil Engineering students for their careers as recognised by The Complete University Guide 2018, which ranked us 9th in the UK for graduate prospects.

Our civil engineering degrees are designed to meet the needs of the civil engineering industry. We are continuously reviewed by an Industrial Advisory Board made up of practising engineers from companies such as:

- Arup - Atkins - Interserve - Mott MacDonald

From the pioneering work of Professor Olek Zienkiewicz in the 1960's to our current training of first class international researchers, we have gained worldwide recognition.

We are one of the key centres for research and training in computational mechanics and engineering. Many techniques used in commercial simulation software originated in Swansea.‌

Civil Engineering at Swansea University is recognised as one of the top 200 departments in the world (QS World Subject Rankings).

Industry Experience

Year In Industry

Many of our students at Swansea University choose to spend a Year in Industry as part of their degree, which can have huge benefits for the company involved and the student working within the company.

A Year in Industry can be taken as part of a BEng or MEng degree programme.

As part of your undergraduate course, a Year in Industry can provide a great enhancement to your degree and future career.

Get more information about our Year in Industry here.

We also offer Year Abroad schemes too - find out more about these on the course pages.

Through Swansea University's Paid Internship Network we seek to connect our students to employers for graduate level placements. We offer paid internships between June and September each summer. All participating students receive a free employability master-class and are assessed via a mandatory employability assessment centre.

Find more information about our Work Placements here.

‌The International Development Office have opportunities for students to gain international work experience and take part in work abroad programmes as part of the degree (depending on scheme). Summer work placements are also available. Find out more about working abroad here.

Alex Chan, Graduate Civil Engineer at Arup

Alex Chan, Graduate Civil Engineer at Arup

"The staff at Swansea University are very supportive, and I received a lot of 1 on 1 help for things I didn’t understand at first.

The lecturers are very energetic and active, and have lots of knowledge.

I especially received a lot of help and support from my final project supervisor.

I enjoyed the weather and the beaches in the area.

The people in Swansea are friendly, it was weird at first but so nice that strangers say hello and care.

It’s been good to start a great career at Arup from my degree at Swansea University."

"During the interviews, for Artelia International, I thought I was well prepared for the technical questions. Also, all the design and group projects we had done throughout the degree were all very helpful when asked to cite particular examples in specific situations.

Our surveying trip in first year with the brilliant Prof. Oubay Hassan, the passionate lectures of Prof. Antonio Gil and the brilliant opportunity I was given by my ex-tutor Prof. Tom Chen to co-write a chapter of an engineering book with him following the success of my dissertation."
