A public debate competition, to be held as part of the Gwyddonle

Swansea University sponsors and hosts activities at GwyddonLe, the Science Pavilion of the Urdd National Eisteddfod. The Morgan Institute Challenge has been part of the GwyddonLe activities since 2018 and we are delighted to say that we decided to run the Challenge again this year but this time, live online.

The competition is sponsored by the Morgan Institute of Advanced Studies, a center of higher studies focused on interdisciplinary transformational research, and organised by Academi Hywel Teifi, a center promoting Welsh medium higher education.

Speakers from three schools went head to head to debate on the topic 'Is now the time to declare the climate crisis?'. The schools shortlisted this year were;

  • Ysgol Bro Dinefwr School
  • Ysgol Gymraeg Bro Morgannwg
  • Ysgol Gyfun Gwyr

This was an opportunity for pupils to demonstrate their reasoning and argumentation skills as well as receiving feedback from leading figures who judged the competition. This year the judges were politician Ben Lake MP and global expert on climate change, Professor Siwan Davies.

The best speaker for and against the set text will receive £250 each for their schools and the winning individual will win the Morgan Insitute Scholarship and have the opportunity to undertake work experience organised by Academi Hywel Teifi. The competition will run from 12pm to 1pm on Friday, June 4 and will be broadcast live on Facebook.
