Our Mathematics Department is right next to the beautiful Swansea Bay beachfront and can be found in the Computational Foundry building at our Bay Campus, which provides students access to bespoke study and teaching spaces designed by and for mathematicians, as well as housing a departmental library of resources for study and research.

Your Mathematics Experience

Our staff are experts in their areas of mathematics with the majority being recognized by the Higher Education Academy with a Fellowship or Senior Fellowship. Your learning will be shaped by inspirational and internationally-renowned academics with expertise in a range of topics in pure and applied mathematics.

Within our Mathematics Department, we build community through targeted support and social connection. There is an active mathematics student society (SUMSOC), which organises regular events for both staff and students, this encourages synergy between groups. 

We also facilitate a  sense of community and belonging by organising regular employability events, where external speakers will come to speak to you in our Reading Room. We encourage these enriching activities to ensure that you develop both professional networks and friendships, creating a supportive environment long before graduating. 

This programme includes opportunities to undertake a Year Abroad, spent in locations such as the USA, Canada, China, Hong Kong, or Singapore, enhancing your learning and offering invaluable life experience.

This course also offers you the opportunity to spend a Year in Industry, in the UK or overseas, enabling you to gain valuable workplace experience. The University advocates for paid-only placements, which on average have a salary of over £20,000. Unpaid placements are considered on a case-by-case basis.

This programme is also available as a 4-year MMath, which is an advanced undergraduate degree, adding a further research-focused year to your degree. Our MMath leads to a master’s level qualification, in addition to your undergraduate degree, giving you expert scientific training and a springboard towards a range of specialist careers.

Mathematics Employment Opportunities

Mathematics graduates typically earn salaries 50% higher than the average graduate. 

Exciting graduate destinations include: 

  • Teaching
  • Actuarial sector – in particular for students who chose the required combinations of optional modules to be eligible for potential IFoA exemptions
  • Banking and Finance Sector - for example, accountancy in both the public and private sector, the insurance industry and city banking
  • Statistics Careers - this includes data analysis careers in both the public and private sector
  • Programming - both general computer programming and statistical programming
  • Further study - our degree programmes provide a strong mathematical grounding for  PhD study

Our graduates have gained employment at lucrative organisations including AXA, British Airways, Deutsche Bank, Shell Research, Health Authorities and Local Government.
