About

Professor Masters is Head of the Centre of Expertise in Ocean Energy and Hydrogen at Swansea University, with 15 academic staff members.

Professor Master’s research considers how to generate power from the sea. Ocean energy technology includes the use of wind turbines, wave energy converters  and underwater tidal turbines. In addition to novel engineering topics, one theme of the research is how this technology can be seen in a wider picture, how it interacts with the ocean and ecology within it, and how the technology can create new business opportunities, create local jobs and support communities.

Two recent major projects focus on regional development and ocean energy industry collaborative R&D: Ireland Wales project SELKIE (with UC Cork) and the Marine Energy Engineering Centre of Excellence (MEECE) with the ORE Catapult and four Welsh Universities. Ian is also Co-Director of the EPSRC Industrial CDT in Offshore Renewable Energy (IDCORE).

Career Highlights

Research

Floating offshore wind turbine (FLOW) projects include: NPT-FLOWRD, helping local supply chain SMEs in Neath Port Talbot for the future FLOW supply chain; Innovate UK funded steel fatigue calculations with Marine Power Systems; wind tunnel testing of enhanced vortex generators for wind turbine blades with Anakata and ORE Catapult.

Working with UC Cork, the Selkie Interreg Ireland Wales project (€5m) enabled cross-border cooperation and commercialization of ocean energy technologies in Welsh and Irish waters in and around the Irish Sea. Over 100 organisations participated in knowledge transfer to industrial stakeholders and assisting ocean energy SMEs towards commercialisation.

ORE Catapult and Swansea run the Marine Energy Engineering Centre for Excellence, funded by ERDF and Swansea Bay City Deal. This delivered a Tidal Demonstration Turbine, the first ever device tested at the Marine Energy Test Area. We partnered with C-Gen, to demonstrate a novel electrical generator in 2025.

The Maribe project (H2020) considered the best business models for the offshore blue growth economy and resulted in an evaluation methodology and an open source book that gives a major review of the Blue Economy.
