Prof Gert Aarts FLSW is a professor in theoretical physics, with research interests in QCD under extreme conditions, the sign problem, and computational and analytical approaches in quantum field theory.

He is currently Director of the UKRI Centre for Doctoral Training in Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning and Advanced Computing (AIMLAC) and Head of the Particle Physics and Cosmology Theory group.

PH-329 Quantum Information Processing

The basic concepts of quantum mechanics, quantum algorithms and quantum computers are introduced. Students will reach an understanding of some of today¿s most relevant quantum algorithms, including Grover's search algorithm and Shor¿s algorithm for factoring, as well as quantum teleportation and quantum cryptography protocols. Various state-of-the-art experimental realisations of prototype quantum computers based on photons, trapped ions and superconducting qubits, as well as modern developments such as quantum error correction and the D-Wave quantum machine will be discussed.
PH-M28 Machine Learning for Physicists

A module which gives an introduction to the concepts and practices of Machine Learning with a focus upon the aspects and applications relevant to Physics.
