About

Dr Clare Wood is Head of the Department of Civil Engineering and an Associate Professor in Civil Engineering at Swansea University. She holds an undergraduate Masters degree in Civil Engineering with Architecture (1st Class, Univ. Glasgow 2002) and postgraduate research Masters and PhD in Computational Methods for Engineering (Swansea University 2003 and 2007). She was winner of the UK Association of Computational Mechanics best PhD paper prize in 2007.

She has extensive experience in research and industry collaborations and is an expert in both computational methods for engineering and experimental investigations of sustainable construction materials, in particular low carbon cementitious materials and concrete products.

She currently leads a number of industry-collaborative research projects along materials, sustainability and biodiversity themes and is lead supervisor for postgraduate research on these topics as well as the themes of engineering leadership and sustainable practice.

Taught Modules

EG-2005 Civil Engineering Design Project

This module is a comprehensive group design project which includes both reinforced concrete and steel design based upon a real-life project scenario. Students will be required to work through the full design process from conceptual to detailed design. At the end of the project, groups will produce a full portfolio with an A1 poster outlining the initial structural design concept, complete design calculations, engineering drawings, as well as health and safety considerations and whole-life sustainability for the developed design.
EG-2008 Civil Engineering Design Methods

In this module methods for Eurocode compliant design of Steel and Reinforced Concrete structural elements will be taught, with a focus on steel beams, columns and connections and reinforced concrete beams, slabs, and columns.
EG-258 Civil Engineering Design and Practice 1
