Jo holds an Honours degree in Physical Education and Educational Studies and a PhD in Developmental Sport Psychology, both from the University of Wales, Bangor and has taught in Higher Education for 20 years.

Jo is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, a BASES Fellow and BPS Associate Fellow, a BPS Chartered Sport and Exercise Psychologist with Health Care Professions Council Registration and holds BASES Accreditation for Research.


Jo’s research has two key themes: (1) psychosocial aspects of physical activity and exercise in middle-aged and older adults, in particular, age-related stereotypes and identity, and, (2) understanding and enhancing the learning, teaching and the student experience in Higher Education. Her research often makes use of Reversal Theory to explore these themes.
