Understanding key performance indicators in the United Rugby Championship
This PhD project, funded by Scarlets Rugby, is using data analytics to understand success in the United Rugby Championship (URC), and relates to our ongoing wider body of work in international and professional Rugby Union. This current project builds on our existing work by aiming to establish whether the key performance indicators that predict success in the URC are consistent across seasons and can therefore be relied upon by coaches and practitioners for longitudinal tactics.
The project then aims to further understand spatial and temporal features of the identified KPIs. Whilst this project uses multiple sources of match data in combination with a range of analytical methods, its ultimate aim is to produce simple, practical insights for use within rugby union teams.
