Professor Tom Crick holding his IET Achievement Medal

The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) has awarded an IET Achievement Medal to Professor Tom Crick MBE of Swansea University.

Professor Crick was one of 11 of the world’s top engineering and technology professionals to have been honoured for services to academia and industry at the recent Achievement Awards ceremony.

The IET Achievement Medals exist to recognise individuals from all over the world who have made exceptional contributions to the advancement of engineering, technology, and science in any sector. This can be through research and development in their respective technical field or through their leadership of an enterprise.

Professor Crick, Professor of Digital & Policy and Deputy Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Civic Mission at Swansea University, is recognised internationally as leading the development of an innovative new science and technology school curriculum in Wales, alongside wider leadership in UK digital, engineering and technology policy as Chair of several high-profile reviews for the Welsh Government. His work across research, policy and practice represents a distinguished and impactful contribution across education, skills, digital economy, and national infrastructure.

In 2017, Professor Crick was appointed MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours for services to computer science and the promotion of computer science education. In 2020, he was awarded the British Educational Research Association’s individual Public Engagement and Impact Award for “Leading the Future of Science and Technology Education in Wales”. Earlier this year he was named a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences

On receiving the IET Achievement Medal, Professor Crick said: “I’m delighted to receive this prestigious award from the IET, recognising the long-term engagement and impact across STEM education research, policy and practice to better understand and highlight the importance of science, engineering and technology on citizens, society and the economy. This is particularly relevant to ongoing major policy reforms in Wales, and especially the start of new Curriculum for Wales from September 2022.”

Bob Cryan, IET President, said: “We are honoured to present these talented individuals with our Achievement Awards. They have each excelled in their professions and have made a vast contribution as pioneers of important areas in the engineering and technology industries. Our medal winners today are innovators who have all made a difference to the world in which we live.”
