Multi-media Journalist and Presenter - Ignatius Annor

Originally from Ghana, Ignatius Annor came to Swansea in 2015 and pursued a degree in MA International Journalism. He returned to Africa after graduation and is now a multi-media journalist and presenter for the pan African news media Africanews. Commenting on his time in Swansea, he says,

‘I completed my Master’s program in International Journalism from Swansea University. Overall, I enjoyed myself and every experience that came my way. Tutors and other supporting staff were beyond helpful. It was certain that they were living their purpose by fully committing to what they have been gifted with. The course exposed me to a new knowledge of what to expect in a global media house, something I have always aspired to do. It is no wonder that currently, I work with Africanews, the first Pan African News Channel based in Pointe-Noire, Congo(Brazzaville) as a  Multimedia Journalist and Anchor. I currently produce and host Sci Tech every Tuesday. I deal with everything concerning science, technology and digital innovation. I work in a multicultural environment and the need to cooperate with others is crucial. Diligence, pro-activeness, creativity and a desire to push beyond boundaries – these qualities gained from Swansea University are valuable assets to my current employment. Thank you, Swansea!’

Account executive - Anupama Subramaniyam‌

“Having done both my undergraduate and postgraduate degree in Swansea University, I am, to a large extent, where I am thanks to my years at Swansea University. My Bachelors in Media and English helped me indulge myself in the deep corners of literature, with powerful sessions, be it lectures or discussions. The MA course in Communications, Media Studies and Public Relations, largely helped me learn how to communicate with different people. Both courses, and the people of the university, helped me overcome my fear of posing my opinions. If there’s one thing I take away from Swansea University, it’s that no idea is put down. You’re able to express any idea openly, and this acceptance of creativity is what helped me land my job with Edelman India. During my interview process, I was not afraid to think out of the box, and fuse creativity with professionalism - making press releases, authored articles and pitch notes more fun, and more engrossing to read. The students, teachers and staff of Swansea University are very accepting, understanding and most of all, readily available to help out any student. It’s a place where one can easily grow and be guided towards a career path that they are best suited for, as well as one they will love...just like I am doing.”

Events Co-ordinator - Rosie Joyce

I completed both my undergraduate and postgraduate degrees at Swansea University in the field of Communications, Media Practise, and PR. I chose to study Communications because I was attracted to the diversity and the dynamics of the subject, and I believe that effective marketing and comms are critical for successful business. On the course I learnt a wide variety of skills, from how to put together strategic PR and marketing campaigns, to video production, about digital media and the web, to branding and graphic design. To develop these skills, I undertook a number of internships alongside both of my degrees.

I worked at 2 creative PR agencies, a digital marketing agency, and a Mobile App Development company where I got the inspiration for my final MA Dissertation project. When I graduated from my MA I was employed as a PR Account Executive for a full service creative PR agency that I had interned at as a student. The skills I had learnt through my course were critical for achieving this position as I was able to bring a wide variety of knowledge to the company.

Having completed internships whilst I was a student significantly helped me, and provided me with a competitive CV when I left university. In my current position as Events Co-ordinator, I have again found that the practical skills are so valuable. Media and communications has taught me so many different things.

The course and its Faculty have broadened my horizon not only in New Media but other subjects such as Computer Science and Politics & International Relations. If I haven’t yet succeeded in making the reader envious and inspired to take this course, I would only conclude by mentioning that you would miss out on lectures worth experiencing.“

Tejeswini Krishnan, Swansea University Graduate from India.

We are Ayo and Jing Li, International Students from Nigeria and China currently studying the MA in Communication, Media Practice and Public Relations at Swansea University. As part of our Video and Documentary Making module assessment we have to work in a team to produce a five minute video, so we decided to make a video about student life. As International students we found it challenging to adapt into a new learning environment so we have made this video to help and guide new students. Making videos is a brand new experience for us and we have realised that it is all about teamwork.  We both have different strengths and have enjoyed working together to decide on our best ideas. Our project has also helped us to learn more about Swansea University. We can say that student life here is wondrous, we have had good fun making our video and Swansea is definitely the right choice for us.

Olubolade Ayokunle and Jing Li

"I thoroughly enjoyed my placement at MGB. I felt that I was really involved with the work that the team was doing and that I helped out as much as I could. Everyone at MGB was so friendly and I felt totally welcomed and comfortable in the office. I have now been offered a years placement as an apprentice with MGB, working with them for one day a week. I am completely shocked by the offer and am over the moon to say the least! It is highly likely that I will take the offer, as it can be a flexible placement to allow for my university work.

2015 Student Awards

ENTREPRENEURIAL MEDIA ALUMNI HONOUR BEST CURRENT STUDENTS

Two entrepreneurial Swansea University media and communication graduates have donated prizes to celebrate the success of current BA media and communication students.

At today’s (20th July 2015) Swansea University graduation ceremony the Andrew Macarthy Prize for excellence is being presented to Benjamin Palmer for his first class honours BA Media Studies degree.  Benjamin received the top marks in the BA media and communication programme.  The Pencil PR prize is being presented to Sian Griffiths, who also received a first class degree, for outstanding results in the BA Media and Communication, particularly in PR modules.

THE ANDREW MACARTHY PRIZE: Andrew Macarthy graduated from Swansea University with a BA Media Studies in June 2006.  In March 2012 he published his book 500 Social Media Marketing Tips, selling over 60,000 copies. www.andrewmacarthy.com.  In addition to this, Andrew created and runs Little Dragon Welsh Gifts, designing and selling Welsh merchandise. www.littledragonwelshgifts.com

THE PENCIL PR PRIZE: Becky Lewis graduated from Swansea University with a BA in English and Media Studies in June 2008.  She started her career working for a PR agency in Norwich before deciding to set up her own agency, Pencil PR, in 2011.  Pencil PR continues to grow in strength with Becky working on clients as diverse as Northney Ice Cream, the Hampshire Credit Union and The London Dinner Club.

‘It is wonderful to be able to celebrate two sets of successes today’ says Media & Communication Undergraduate Programme Director, Sian Rees.  ‘Ben Palmer and Sian Griffiths have been outstanding and dedicated students and they really deserve both their excellent degrees, but also these prizes which pay tribute to their academic prowess and perseverance.  It is also wonderful that two entrepreneurial past graduates, who have both set up their own successful businesses, have come back to support the degree scheme and help us recognise excellence.  We are very grateful to both Andrew and Becky for their support.’
