The University of Utrecht is located in Utrecht in the Netherlands a 45 minute drive from Amsterdam and just under an hour from the German border. Utrecht experiences cool winters with temperatures just above freezing and warm summers. It is the largest and one of the oldest universities’ in the Netherlands and is ranked in the top 100 universities in the world by the Shanghai rankings. University accommodation cannot be guaranteed for exchange students and it can take a while to find private accommodation so be prepared to start looking early.

It will not be possible to complete a year abroad at this University if you have any assessments, such as supplementary or deferred exams, during the August assessment period at Swansea University.

Important considerations

  • A Residence Permit (VVR) and an Entry Visa (MVV) are required for all non-EU/EEA citizens staying in the Netherlands for longer than 3 months. Your host university will provide you with specific information
  • The demand for student housing in Utrecht is extremely high. You may need to consider sourcing private accommodation - your host university will advise further
