Chief Finance Officer
Darren Griffiths joined the NHS in 1991 as an A-level entrant to the All WalesFinance Training Scheme. He qualified at the end of the programme in early 1995 and took up his first post in Cardiff Community Healthcare NHS Trust as a Directorate Accountant. Darren joined Bridgend and District NHS Trust in 1997 where he worked mainly in acute care finance. Darren went on to hold a variety of posts within Finance between 1997 and 2004 including project manager for the implementation of the Oracle System and Finance and Business Manager for the spin out of the Bridgend wound care business from the Health Service to being a private company, raising capital and working through the establishment orders to form the business in its own right.
In 2005 Darren took up the post of Deputy Director of Planning and held that role through various iterations of the organisation through to the establishment of ABMU Health Board. In 2011 Darren combined his planning role with an Assistant Director of Acute Care role working through the final stages of restructuring the Health Board. In 2014 Darren became Interim Director of Planning leading on the development of the Health Board’s three year plan and during this time he also took on a lead role in performance for the Health Board. He then held the post of Assistant Director of Strategy until September 2018 where he took up the role of Associate Director of Performance, where he commenced his membership of the Executive Team and became an attendee at Board working directly to the Chief Executive.
In early March 2020 Darren returned to finance to become the interim Executive Director of Finance and Performance, a role which includes leadership of local counter fraud services and procurement as well as the finance and performance portfolios. Darren was substantively appointed to the role in August 2021 when capital, estates and health and safety leadership were added to his portfolio. In 2022 Darren joined the corporation Board of Gower College Swansea where he holds the role of Governor. For a 14 month period from the autumn of 2023, Darren held the role of acting deputy Chief Executive of the Health Board alongside his substantive role.
Darren lives in the area and is passionate about Swansea and the impact that the University can have on the local economy as well as providing exemplary education to it students. Darren has 2 grown up children of his own and 2 step children and in his spare time he enjoys veteran’s touch rugby.
