About

Professor Hutchings is a Professor of Health Services Research based at the Institute of Life Sciences 2. Hayley is also the Director of Swansea Trials Unit, one of around 50 trials units that are registered with the UK Clinical Research Collaboration. (https://ukcrc-ctu.org.uk).  Hayley's first degree was gained from Cardiff Metropolitan University in 1990 in Biomedical Science (First class honours).  She then completed her PhD at Cardiff University where she was based at the Common Cold and Nasal Research Centre on a studentship from Procter and Gamble Pharmaceuticals.  After various research roles, Hayley was appointed as a Lecturer at Swansea University in 2005 and was promoted to a Personal Chair in March 2016.

Hayley’s focus in mainly on research.  She has 30 years post-doctoral research experience in health services research and trials. Hayley's research interests include patient reported outcomes measures (PROMs), trials and the use of anonymised linked routine data.  Hayley is currently leading or providing input into a range of research projects within these areas.  She has published over 150 research publications to date.  Hayley is a member of the Faculty internal REF committee, that assesses the quality of research publications. She also undertakes peer review activities for a large number of national and international grant funding bodies and high impact medical journals.

Hayley has a successful track record of supervising and examining postgraduate research students and has previously held both school and University strategic level positions to oversee postgraduate research.  Hayley is a senior advisor on the Faculty of Medicine Health and Life Science postgraduate research committee that helps to oversee postgraduate medical student research and strategy.

In addition to her research roles, Hayley supervises undergraduate Applied Medical Sciences and Genetics and Biochemistry students as part of their final year undergraduate research projects.
