About

Dr Jo Maddern is an Associate Professor in Human Geography, specialising in new cultural and historical geographies and educational development.
 
She has a PhD in cultural representations of migration at Ellis Island from Aberystwyth University (2004) and has held academic positions in Dundee University (2000- 2005, Lecturer in Geography), Aberystwyth University (2005 - 2016, Director of the PGCTHE & learning and teaching development coordinator) and Swansea University (2017  - present, Associate Professor). 
 
She was the incumbent programme director for Swansea Geography (2017-2024) and is an advisor and writer for the most recent national QAA Geography benchmark statement (2022).
 
Dr Maddern obtained Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (2017) and assesses Senior Fellowship applications for Swansea Academy of Learning and Teaching. She has led scheduled quality reviews for departments across the University and internal staff development events and away days.
 
She holds a postgraduate qualification in Personal and Business Coaching and has acted as a mentor for Women’s academic mentoring networks.
 
She holds a senior visiting fellowship in educational development from Windsor University Ontario (2013). She has delivered educational development workshops and seminars in a range of national and international contexts including India, the Middle East and North America.
 
Her research interests span areas such as heritage, travel, leisure, tourism, memory, landscape, place-making, mobility, the politics of fieldwork and pedagogy. She is available for postgraduate supervision and welcomes student enquiries.
