I am a historian of modern Wales and of popular culture in modern Britain.
I’ve published books and articles that look at politics, sport, race, national identity, pop music, disasters and local government. At the heart of most of my research are questions of identity. I am interested in how people think of who they are and their place in their world.
Many of these articles can be downloaded from my academia.edu profile.
My research blog is www.martinjohnes.com
My main current research project is a book on language and education in 19th century Wales provisionally entitled: Welsh Not: Education and the Anglicization of 19th Century Wales.
I am also currently working on projects on the histories of baldness and masculinity, the England-Wales border, and the place of history in Welsh education and culture.
